OXFORD, Ohio - A pair of Bowling Green State University women's soccer players were named to the 2002 Mid-American Conference All-Tournament Team. Senior goalkeeper Erika Flanders and sophomore forward Kristy Coppes were both named to the 11-player squad, it was announced Sunday afternoon (Nov. 10).
Flanders made seven stops in the Falcons' 2-1, double-overtime victory over Buffalo in the tournament's quarterfinal round Wednesday (Nov. 6). Then, she made eight saves in BGSU's 3-0 loss at top-seeded Miami, the eventual tourney champion, in the semifinal round.
Coppes scored BGSU's first goal in the win over Buffalo. The goal was her 12th of the season, tying the school record that she had also matched as a freshman in 2001.
For Flanders, the all-tournament team honor was the second of her career. She was also named to the MAC's all-tourney squad in 2000, as the Falcons advanced to the championship match that season.
Miami, the 2002 regular-season champion, won the MAC Tournament with a 5-1 victory over Ohio in Sunday's championship contest.
The Falcons, picked to finish ninth in the MAC's preseason coaches poll, ended the regular season in fourth place and set school records for both overall (12) and conference (seven) wins. The Falcons went 12-8-2 in 2002, including a 7-4-1 MAC mark.
