BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -
BGSU HEAD COACH CURT MILLER:
"You use exhibition games to really find out what you need to keep working on, going into the regular season. Tonight we played a team filled with high-quality individual players, that had great college careers in their own right. You hope as a college team, as you're coming together, that teamwork can overcome great individual play in an exhibition game of this sort. We will not play two quicker guards than (Tricia) Bader-Binford and (Jamie) Lewis all year. I'm ecstatic with how we played at times."
"Offensively, we had a good first half and made some plays. In the second half, we were a little bit out of synch. And, what frustrated me the most in the second half was that we couldn't get ourselves to the foul line. As a penetrating, aggressive offense, we have to find ways to get to the foul line."
"During (some of our) runs, we had three or four freshmen on the floor at one time. I can't be more pleased with the way our freshmen played. Jill Lause was incredible; she had a very good offensive night and was very good on the boards. Molly (Martin) played a very productive and solid 14 minutes, and Marisa Smith will be an instant-offense type of kid throughout her career here. She continues to step up and make shots for us. Britt Anderson, who has essentially been away from us during all of the preseason due to her soccer commitment, showed flashes that she's going to really help us this year."
"I hope the people that were in attendance tonight left here excited about our freshman class and about some of the things we did."
"Stefanie Wenzel continues to be our go-to player offensively, and after a slow start, she still had a great game. If we can keep Francine (Miller) healthy, I think that will give us a great one-two scoring punch."
"You will see, in the long run, Lindsay Austin be one of the best point guards in this league. She played against a WNBA point guard tonight, and her stat line does not indicate the type of preseason she is having. To come out of a game being guarded by Bader-Binford, and to have an assist/turnover ratio of 5-to-2, makes me very pleased. But, you will also see her scoring numbers up this year."
"I wanted to take a look at the freshmen on the floor together, and, as I said, I can't be more pleased. They made mistakes and they missed some assignments. But, overall, this group was recruited to give us more scoring punch. This group, as they mature, will really score for us, and they will continue to get minutes as they continue to improve their overall game."
"We didn't sugarcoat anything. We let our team know about the talent of the players on that team. I think it shows that, individually, they may have more talent, but teamwork can really minimize some of that individual talent. By playing as a team, we had a real legitimate shot at winning that game tonight."
"We played a lot of people tonight, and that was my goal. There were times where I played some of the young kids longer, and that was for a reason. I wanted to see how they would be in a pressure situation, not when we're up 25, or down big and overmatched in a game."
FRESHMAN CENTER JILL LAUSE:
(On the play of the freshmen:) "I think it shows how hard we've been working in practice. We (the freshmen) play together as a group a lot in practice, and that has really helped us to jell as a group. We still have a ton to work on, but everyone is excited to get going, and this was a good learning experience."
