Bowling Green, Ohio - Bowling Green exploded for five goals in the first period and added two more in the third period to post a 7-1 victory over the visiting U.S. National Development Program Team Under-18 team at BGSU Ice Arena on Friday.
Junior captain D'Arcy McConvey broke into the scoring column at just :26 seconds in the first period for a 1-0 Falcon lead. Brian Escobedo and Mark Wires assisted on the goal.
Soon after, Wires scored his first of two goals on the night with a power-play tally at 2:19 in the first period. Escobedo again assisted and was helped this time by McConvey, to up the lead to 2-0.
After Ryan Minnabarriet's goal at 2:47 of the first period moved the BGSU lead to 3-0, the next Falcon goal didn't come until 10:05 of the first. Senior Tyler Knight netted the goal and Wires put the finishing touches on the period with his second goal at 14:14 for a 5-0 BGSU lead. Both Wires and McConvey ended with three points in the first period, alone.
"He's got great speed," BGSU coach Scott Paluch said of Wires. "The thing for Mark is to use that speed not only in his offensive play, but to get loose pucks. We need Mark to score goals."
The offensive burst for the Falcons in the first period was a sure way to keep the momentum gained from last weekend's tie vs. Michigan going.
"We wanted to, after last weekend (vs. Michigan), make sure we keep moving forward," said Paluch. "We wanted to continue to play Falcon hockey. We got off to a great start. We shot pucks, were able to get people on net, the power play was sharp...for our team to get some offense early was a great way to start the game.
"I don't like to take as many penalties as we did, and having to kill off 11 penalties is certainly not a great formula." BGSU ended with 11 penalties and killed off 10 of Team U.S.A.'s 11 power plays.
Team U.S.A. broke into the scoring column early in the second period with a power-play goal by Ryan Suter (00:41). J.D. Collins and Jeff Likens assisted on the goal and cut the BGSU lead to 5-1.
Midway through the third period, sophomore Steve Brudzewski got in the action for BGSU (11:51) and then junior Kip Horner put the finishing touches on the game with a goal with just one second remaining.
Senior Tyler Masters allowed one goal on 19 shots faced (18 saves) in the first 40 minutes for the Falcons.
Freshman Bob Frazee played the third period in net for the Falcons, stopping all seven shots he faced. It was his first action of the season for the Brown and Orange.
"We've talked about Tyler (Masters) and Jordan (Sigalet) all season, but Bob Frazee's been working hard all season during practice," said Paluch. "He looked solid in there and did a nice job. He's worked hard and is a good goalie."
BGSU (2-8-1 overall, 0-7-1 CCHA) returns to regular-season action next Friday, Nov. 22, when league-foe Michigan State comes to the BGSU Ice Arena (7:05 p.m. face-off). The MSU game will be the last home game for the Falcons until the new year (Jan. 3-4 vs. Alaska Fairbanks).
