Oxford, Ohio - Miami University struck first on Saturday against Bowling Green at 1:23 in the first period and went on to post a 6-1 victory over visiting BGSU at Goggin Ice Arena in Oxford, Ohio.
The Redhawks took advantage of several of Bowling Green's 13 penalties, scoring on 4-of-7 power plays in the game, to finish with a series sweep of the Falcons.
"They're power play was the difference," said BGSU coach Scott Paluch. "Us taking some unecessary penalties put us in the hole."
Miami's first goal was one of its two even-strength goals on the night and came off of the stick of Mike Kompon at 1:23.
Several minutes later, Bowling Green freshman Brett Pilkington went flying into the boards and had to be helped off the ice. Soon afterwards, sophomore Alex Rogosheske took a five-minute major penalty and a game misconduct (5:44) that put the dangerous Redhawks on the power play for five minutes.
It took Miami over two minutes but it capitalized with a power-play goal from Nick Jardine at 7:58 of the first period and the Redhawks led 2-0. The scored stayed that way at the end of the first period. Miami held a 13-5 shot advantage in the opening period and Pilkington returned later in the period.
"As the game was going, we were giving ourselves a opportunity to keep it at 2-0," said Paluch.
"We felt we were still in the game at 2-0," said BGSU freshman forward Ryan Barnett.
However, Miami scored four second-period goals, including three power-play tallys, to extend its lead to 6-0 entering the third period.
Barnett scored BGSU's lone goal of the night and his first career netter with the Brown and Orange at 8:39 of the third period. Sophomore Ryan Minnabarriet went into the boards to dig out the puck, fed Mike Falk, who in turn got it to Barnett who was camping outside the crease. For Falk, it was his second point of the weekend after registering a goal on Friday night. He leads the Falcons in scoring in six league games with 2-3--5. He has 2-4--6 for the season (nine games).
Senior Tyler Masters was in net for BGSU, registering 43 saves on the 49 shots he faced. Miami's David Burleigh had 24 saves on 25 Falcon shots.
"We didn't give him too much help," Barnett said of Masters.
"They have some guys that can finish and they took advantage of it," Paluch said of Miami.
BGSU drops to 2-7-0 overall, 0-6-0 in the CCHA. Miami improves to 8-2-0 overall and 5-1-0 in the CCHA. The Falcons host #5-ranked Michigan next weekend at the BGSU Ice Arena (Nov. 8-9). Both face-offs are scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
