BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Bowling Green State University senior Jill Conover has been named to the Verizon Academic All-District IV University Division Women's Soccer Team, it was announced today. Conover, who earns academic all-district honors for the second time in her career, was named to the second team.
Conover maintains a 3.81 grade point average as a computer science major. On the field, she has a total of 10 points this season to rank fourth on the team.
A native of Grand Island, N.Y., Conover is tied for fourth on the Falcons in goals, with four, and also has two assists. She has played in all 21 matches to date, making three starts.
Conover is the school's career scoring leader, with a total of 65 points, and is tied for second in BGSU history with 20 goals. In addition to points, Conover also holds the school career records for assists, with 25, and match-winning goals, with seven.
Conover set yet another school record by playing in the 79th match of her career in Wednesday's (Nov. 6) Mid-American Conference Tournament quarterfinal win over Buffalo.
This season, her goals have included the match winners vs. both Pittsburgh and Akron. In the latter match, she assisted on the first goal of the match, then scored the winner with approximately six minutes left, in a 2-1 victory.
Conover, as mentioned, makes the Verizon Academic All-District Team for the second consecutive year. Last year, she was a first-team selection. Conover is the only student-athlete in the six-year history of the BGSU women's soccer program to earn academic all-district honors.
The 2002 Verizon Academic All-District IV University Division Team is made up of student-athletes from Division I schools in the states of Alabama, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee. To be nominated, a student-athlete must hold at least sophomore status, be a starter or key reserve, and carry a cumulative GPA of 3.20 or higher. Team members are selected by a vote of members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) within the district.
The 2002-03 academic year marks the second time a women's soccer team has been selected. Prior to the 2001-02 academic year, women's soccer student-athletes were part of the Fall/Winter Sports At-Large ballot.
The Falcons have a record of 12-7-2 heading into Friday's (Nov. 8) MAC Tournament semifinal round. BGSU, the fourth seed for the tourney, will face top-seeded Miami University in a 2:00 p.m. match in Oxford, Ohio.
