OXFORD, Ohio - Bowling Green State University women's soccer senior Erika Flanders has been named to the 2002 All-Mid-American Conference First Team. The award was announced at the MAC Tournament banquet Thursday night (Nov. 7) in Oxford, Ohio.
Flanders, a native of Mason, Ohio (Mason HS), becomes the second Falcon women's soccer player in the six-year history of the program to be named to the All-MAC First Team. Teammate Tracy Gleixner earned the honor in her freshman season of 1998.
Flanders has played every minute of every match this season, a total of 1950:18 in goal. She has a record of 12-7-2, a goals-against average of 1.15 and school-record totals of 129 saves and seven shutouts.
Flanders, who already owns every goalkeeping record in BGSU history, is working on extending or breaking a number of those records. She set the single-season saves record for the fourth consecutive year, making seven stops in the Falcons' MAC Tournament quarterfinal win over Buffalo Wednesday (Nov. 6). Her old record of 127 stops was set last year.
Flanders has set a new seasonal record for minutes played (breaking her mark of 1834:23 in 2000), and is on pace to set season records in both GAA and saves percentage. She has a GAA of 1.15, as mentioned, and her saves pct. currently stands at .838. Her current records in those categories are a 1.37 GAA and a saves pct. of .808, both set in 2000.
This season, Flanders finished the MAC schedule with a solid 1.06 GAA. She made 75 saves in those 12 contests, with a saves pct. of .852 and five shutouts.
Flanders now has 17 career shutouts, and has career totals of 34 wins and 465 saves. She has amassed over two-thirds of all the victories in school history (48), and her saves total far exceeds the career saves total for all of the other goalies in school history combined (280). The second-place 'keeper on the career saves list, Kit Gazley, had 76 career stops.
Flanders is the Falcons' team captain for the 2002 season.
The Falcons, picked to finish ninth in the MAC's preseason coaches poll, placed fourth in the conference with a 7-4-1 league ledger. BGSU has an overall mark of 12-7-2 heading into Friday's (Nov. 8) MAC Tournament semifinal match at Miami.
The MAC also announced the league specialty awards, including the 2002 MAC Player-of-the-Year, Freshman-of-the-Year and Coach-of-the-Year awards, as well as the All-MAC teams, at Thursday's banquet. Falcon freshman Samantha Meister earned the F-O-Y award, marking the second consecutive year a BGSU player had won that award.
Miami senior Danielle Berkemeier was the league's player of the year, while Ball State's Ron Rainey was named the coach of the year.
