Minneapolis, Minn. - This night it was Bowling Green's opposition that jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first period as the Falcons dropped a 5-1 decision to Yale on Saturday night in the consolation game of the Dodge Holiday Classic in Minneapolis, Minn.
After scoring three goals in the first period of Friday's contest against Boston College, the Falcons gave up three goals to Yale in the first period of Saturday's game. The Bulldogs struck first at 3:44 with a goal by Vin Hellemeyer and then again just :13 seconds later thanks to Ryan Steeves (3:57) for a quick 2-0 lead. Yale added its third goal at 18:46 via senior Evan Wax to take a 3-0 lead into the first intermission. However, BGSU held a slim 11-10 shot advantage in the opening period.
BGSU began the second period with a 8-1 shot advantage but couldn't capitalize. Then, sophomore Steve Brudzewski pounded in a rebound of a D'Arcy McConvey shot that put the Falcons on the board at 14:50 of the second period. The goal tied the Dearborn, Mich. native with Mark Wires for the team lead with six. It was McConvey's third assist in the tournament and pushed his point streak to three games.
The Falcons continued the pressure, ending the period with a 17-10 shot advantage, but were only able to narrow its deficit to 3-1 entering the third period.
In the third period, BGSU again put 17 shots on net but could get no closer. Yale added two more goals from Steeves (9:12) and Jeff Hristovski (13:28) for the final 5-1 verdict.
"We were able to create some chances and were pressing well," said BGSU coach Scott Paluch. "We knew that if we turned it around and played Falcon hockey in the final two periods we could be in it. Their goalie played extremely well.
"We've been trying all season to create opportunities. The second part of that equation is capitalizing."
Senior Tyler Masters was in net for the Falcons, stopping 23 of 28 shots. Yale's Josh Gartner had 44 saves on 45 shots faced. The 45 shots attempted by Bowling Green marked the fourth-straight game that the Falcons have had 40 or more shots on goal.
BGSU was 0-for-3 on the power play while Yale was 0-for-2. The three penalties taken by the Falcons was a season low (previously five, three times).
Bowling Green dropped to 3-12-1 overall while Yale improved to 8-5-0. The Falcons will be at home the next two weekends, beginning next week with a two-game series against Alaska Fairbanks (Jan. 3-4). Northern Michigan visits the BGSU Ice Arena the following weekend, Jan. 10-11.
NOTE: Junior captain D'Arcy McConvey was named to the Dodge Holiday Classic All-Tournament team, it was announced late Saturday night, after recording one goal and three assists in the two BGSU games.
