BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Angel Mason had a game-high 16 points off the bench as Butler University posted a 61-54 victory over the Bowling Green State University women's basketball team Wednesday night (Dec. 4). The non-conference game was held at BGSU's Anderson Arena.
For the Falcons, who drop to 1-2 on the young season, senior Kim Griech had 14 points, while senior Francine Miller had 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Butler (2-3) got 10 points from both Lisa Pryor and Nancy Bowden, while Cortney Urquhart had eight points and 12 rebounds.
The visiting Bulldogs shot just .373 from the field, but held the Falcons to a .349 success rate.
The game started off well for the hosts, as the Falcons scored the game's first six points. BGSU held Butler off the scoreboard for the first 4:11 of the contest. But, the Bulldogs would rally.
The visitors went on a 10-3 run, capped by a Stephanie Boeke three-point field goal at the 12:52 mark, and BU would never trail again.
BG got as close as a single point, as a Griech trey cut the deficit to 22-21 with 6:24 left in the half. But, Mason answered with a triple at the other end to start an 8-0 run. That BU run was part of a 12-2 stretch to end the half. Butler shot .417 in the first 20 minutes, to the Falcons' .333.
The visitors scored the first six points of the second half, on a pair of Pryor three-point shots, to take a 17-point lead. The lead grew as high as 19 (46-27) after a Boeke triple with just over 16 minutes left. The Bulldogs went 7-of-19 (.368) from three-point range on the night, to BG's 4-of-14 (.286) effort.
The lead was still 16 points, 58-42, with three minutes left, when the Falcons went on one last run. Junior Lindsay Austin, making her first appearance of the season, hit a shot, and Miller scored the game's next seven points, capped by a triple with 27 seconds left that cut the lead to 61-54. But, BGSU would get no closer than that seven-point margin.
The Bulldogs held a 50-39 rebounding advantage, with nine or Urquhart's 12 caroms coming at the offensive end. BGSU forced Butler into 23 turnovers, while the Falcons committed 19.
Bowden, in addition to her 10-point game, had 10 assists and six rebounds. She played all 40 minutes. Pryor had eight rebounds.
The Falcons got a 5-of-8 shooting performance from Griech, who was 2-of-3 from three-point land. Austin had six points in just 10 minutes off the bench, making three of her four shots on the night.
BGSU sophomore Tene Lewis had three points and a career-high seven rebounds in 16 minutes off the bench. She added three steals, one away from her career best in that department.
The Falcons have little time to regroup, as BG leaves bright and early Thursday morning for the Radisson Suites Roundball Classic in Boca Raton, Fla. The Brown and Orange will take on host Florida Atlantic in the first round Friday (Dec. 6), and will meet either UNC Wilmington or Pittsburgh in Saturday action.
