BOCA RATON, Fla. - Despite a career night by senior Kim Griech, the Bowling Green State University women's basketball team fell to the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, 72-55, Saturday night (Dec. 7). The loss came in the championship game of the Radisson Suites Roundball Classic, hosted by Florida Atlantic University.
Griech shattered her career high with 30 points, going 8-of-11 from the field. The Tallmadge, Ohio, native was 7-of-10 from long distance, tying the school record for three-point field goals made in a game.
Griech was also a perfect 7-of-7 from the free-throw line, as the Falcons (now 2-3 overall) made all 11 of the attempts from the stripe on the evening.
Griech had 11 of her points in the first half, as the Falcons trailed by just one point, 30-29, at the break.
In the second half, however, the Seahawks (now 5-0) scored the first seven points to take an eight-point advantage, and the Falcons never got closer than five points thereafter.
Griech scored 19 of the Falcons' 26 second-half points. She was the lone player in double digits for the Brown and Orange, and was BG's only representative to the all-tournament team. Rachal Friesen-Norwood led the Seahawks with 20 points, making 10 of her 14 shots from the field.
Two other UNCW players, Rachel Wojdowski and Jennifer Kapper, had 13 points apiece. Friesen-Norwood was named the tournament's MVP, while Kapper and Wojdowski also joined Griech on the all-tourney squad. Pittsburgh's Mandy Wittenmyer rounded out the squad.
BGSU returns to the Midwest Sunday, but the road swing continues for the Falcons with a Wednesday (Dec. 11) game at IPFW. That contest will start at 7:00 p.m.
