Gymnastics Falls To UNC; Defeats George Washington

The Bowling Green Gymnastics Team suffered its first loss of the season last weekend at the hands of the University of North Carolina. In the second meeting of the two teams this season, BG scored a team total of 192.675 while the Tarheels won the meet with a 193.825. Head Coach Dan Connelly felt that his team defeated themselves, however. "This first loss is hard to take. We really beat ourselves and that is the most difficult way to lose in athletics. I feel that this was a reality check for us, but overall we have had a great beginning to the season."
There were several individual efforts to be noted for the Falcons. Freshman Stephanie Sams, scored a career high 9.800 on the bars tying for 3rd place overall. Connelly spoke highly of the newcomer saying, "Being first up on the bars is a huge task, especially for a freshman. Stephanie shined last weekend. She's doing a wonderful job meet after meet." Fellow freshman Kari Elste also had a career-best weekend scoring a 9.850 on the bars and winning the event. Junior Ann Marie Kassouf scored a 9.825 on the bars and a 38.475 in the all-around, both were career highs for her as well.
Despite falling to UNC, the Falcons did defeat George Washington University to come away with a 1-1 record for the weekend. BG is now 10-1 overall and 2-0 in the Mid-American Conference. The Falcons return home this Friday, February 15 to host MAC opponent Northern Illinois at 7 p.m. in Eppler Center Complex.
Notables: With their win over Rutgers and Southern Connecticut two weeks ago, the Falcons tied the 1978-79 squad for the best start to a season in BG Gymnastics history with a record of 9-0.
