Bowling Green, Ohio - Bowling Green defeated Lake Superior State on Friday night at the BGSU Icea Arena, 2-0, snapping a five-game losing streak.
Falcon netminder Tyler Masters earned his first shutout of the season en route to the victory. Masters ended with 26 saves in 60 minutes of action for BGSU. The shutout was the sixth of Masters' career and his first since a 1-0 overtime decision against Ferris State March 2, 2001.
"Ty was on the money tonight," said BGSU coach Buddy Powers. "He did everything he needed to tonight."
Tyler Knight broke open the scoring at 8:15 of the first when he weaved through the Laker defense for his fifth goal of the season. Knight scooped up the rebound off a shot by Taylor Christie and slid the puck past LSSU goaltender Matt Violin. Ryan Minnabarriet also garnered an assist on the play.
"He played the body to the wall, took the puck and went to the net," said Powers. "It was a good hockey play."
The score remained 1-0 until the second period, when Grady Moore broke in on Violin and netted his fifth of the season. Denis White and Marc Barlow earned helpers on the Falcons' second goal of the night.
"We needed this win. After all the goals we've given up in the last couple of games, this makes the coaching staff feel good," said Powers. "We finished checks. I thought we played with a good pace."
Both teams had numerous scoring chances in the third period, but Violin and Masters kept the puck out of their nets.
BGSU outshot Lake Superior 33-26 while both teams failed on their power plays (BGSU 0-for-5, LSSU 0-for-4).
Bowling Green's record stands at 8-20-5 (6-15-5 CCHA), while Lake Superior falls to 7-21-1 (4-18-1 CCHA). The Falcons and the Lakers finish their series tomorrow night at the BGSU Ice Arena. Faceoff is at 7:05 p.m.
