DES MOINES, Iowa - The Bowling Green State University men's tennis team posted one of the top victories in recent memory Saturday (Feb. 16), recording a 6-1 victory over host Drake University.
BGSU improves to 6-3 in dual-match play this season with the win over the Bulldogs, who were ranked 75th in the nation in the latest ITA rankings.
"We played very well today," said sixth-year head coach Jay Harris. "This is the first time since I've been at BG that we have beaten a ranked team, so it was obviously a very big win for us. To go into Drake's place, where they don't lose many matches, and come out with a win took a great effort.
"The Czech pair (Milos Jirout and Vitek Wild) winning in the 'breaker clinched the doubles point for us. That was exciting, and really gave us a lot of energy and confidence going into the singles."
In doubles play, the BGSU team of senior Mike Kossoff and sophomore Joel Carney earned an 8-4 win at the third flight, and the Jirout/Wild team won at the second level to clinch the doubles point.
BGSU continued the momentum into sincles play, winning five of the six matches. Junior Geoff Hiscox and Wild each won three-set matches, with Hiscox winning a third-set tiebreaker at the top flight, and Wild rallying back to win the final two sets at flight number three.
Other singles winners, all in straight sets, included junior Nicolas Lopez-Acevedo (flight #4), Carney (#5) and Kossoff (#6).
The Falcons remain on the road for a Sunday (Feb. 17) match at Iowa.
