THE GAME: The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team, having closed the road portion of the regular-season slate with a victory, returns home for the final contest before the Mid-American Conference Tournament begins ... the Falcons of first-year head coach Curt Miller will close the regular season with a Saturday (Feb. 23) contest vs. Eastern Michigan University ... tipoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at venerable Anderson Arena (5,000) ... the BGSU-EMU game will be "Senior Day," and also is the first half of a hoops doubleheader which will see the Falcon men host the University of Akron at approximately 3:30 p.m.
Following the EMU game, the Falcons will be idle for a week ... BGSU will hit the road for the first round of the MAC Tournament, facing an opponent to be determined on Saturday, March 2 ... if the current standings held up, the Falcons would head to Athens, Ohio, to take on Ohio University ... the BGSU men will be in Athens that day, closing the regular season with a 3:00 p.m. game vs. the Bobcats.
WBGU RADIO: The BGSU-EMU game is scheduled to be broadcast by campus station WBGU-FM (88.1) ... the station's broadcast schedule called for a total of 15 women's basketball games (plus any postseason contests) this year, including all of the Falcons' home games.
MAC TOURNAMENT PICTURE: The Falcons will be playing a road game against a team to be determined in the first round of the 2002 MAC Tournament ... that game will be held on Saturday, March 2 ... if the season were to conclude today, the Falcons would be the ninth seed for the 13-team tournament, and would travel to face the eighth-seeded team ... as of now, that team would be Ohio University, which sports a 7-7 MAC mark ... the top-three seeds for the tournament earn first-round byes, with seeds four through eight hosting seeds nine through 13 ... the five first-round winners will join the top-three teams at Cleveland's Gund Arena for the quarterfinal round on March 6.
ABOUT THE FALCONS: BGSU has an overall record of 8-18 on the season, and the Falcons are 5-10 in MAC play after Tuesday's (Feb. 19) 57-56 win at Ohio ... that victory snapped a four-game losing streak for the Falcons, who had lost to Marshall (Feb. 16), Western Michigan (Feb. 14), Miami (Feb. 9) and OU (Feb. 5) in that stretch ... BGSU is now in fourth place in the East Division and ninth place overall.
Prior to the loss to Ohio, the Falcons posted a come-from-behind, 69-65 win at Buffalo (Feb. 2), the team's largest comeback in four years ... BGSU ended the month of January with the team's most decisive victory of the season - a 76-52 home win over Marshall (Jan. 26) -- followed by the largest loss of the MAC slate, an 82-51 setback at Toledo (Jan. 30).
The Falcons opened the season with a 71-61 win at Youngstown State (Nov. 17), but lost the next four games ... BG returned to the win column with a 73-57 victory over IPFW (Nov. 29) before dropping the next four contests ... the Falcons ended the non-conference portion of the schedule with a victory over Lehigh in a post-Christmas tournament hosted by Miami (Fla.).
BG began conference play with an 0-3 mark, but rallied to beat UB and Akron, before suffering road losses to Ball State and Kent State.
Senior Francine Miller has not played since Jan. 5, and will miss the remainder of the season ... she is in the process of appealing for a medical hardship ... Miller saw action in each of the first two MAC contests ... playing for the first time since Nov. 20, she had a game-high 29 points in just 25 minutes vs. KSU (Jan. 2) ... Miller had 15 points off the bench at CMU (Jan. 5) ... she was the team's top scorer in each of the three full games in which she saw action this year ... Miller had 17.5 points per contest in her four games played ... not counting the Detroit game (in which she played four minutes and attempted just one shot), she averaged 23.3 points per game.
Sophomore Stefanie Wenzel leads the Falcons in scoring, and is averaging 11.5 points per contest ... Wenzel, who has a team-best six games of 20 points or more this year, also averages 4.1 rebounds per outing ... junior Kim Griech is averaging 10.3 points per game, and leads the Falcons with 40 three-point field goals on the year.
Sophomore point guard Lindsay Austin averages 9.1 points ... Austin leads the team in assists (4.6 apg), steals (2.1 spg) and minutes per game (33.8) ... she is second on the team with 4.7 rebounds per game ... Austin has led BG in rebounding in three of the last four games.
Redshirt sophomore Pam Brown has 7.3 points, and has a team-best 6.0 rebounds ... Brown, who has missed eight games this year with a knee (lateral meniscus) injury, has had 14 rebounds in each of the Falcons' last two home games ... she did not suit up for seven contests in Nov.-Dec., but had successful surgery on Dec. 6, and made her return in the MAC opener on Jan. 2 ... however, she did not make the trip to Athens, and likely will miss the EMU game as well.
Sophomore Kelly Kapferer has 7.1 points and 4.5 rebounds per game, and leads the team in field-goal percentage (.433) ... senior Dana Western-Schuka averages 6.2 points, 4.7 rebounds and 1.8 steals per game, ranking second on the team in the steals and third in boards ... Western-Schuka leads the Falcons with 21 blocked shots (0.8 bpg).
A total of 10 different players have started at least one game this season ... Griech and Western-Schuka each have been in the starting five for all 26 games to date, while Austin has made 25 starts ... Kapferer has started 18 games, while Wenzel has been in the starting lineup for the last 18 contests ... Brown has started nine games this year, including five-straight games before missing the OU contest ... the lineup had consisted of Austin, Griech, Kapferer, Wenzel and Western-Schuka for 12-straight games, before Brown replaced Kapferer for the game at Buffalo (Feb. 2), but Kapferer was back in the starting five at OU.
BGSU finished the 2000-01 season with a record of 11-18, and the Falcons completed MAC play with a league ledger of 6-10 ... BG ended conference action in fourth place in the MAC's East Division a year ago ... the Falcons posted a 78-75 win at Western Michigan in the first round of the 2001 Kraft MAC Tournament, before losing to Toledo in the quarterfinal round ... a total of 11 letterwinners returned from that squad.
On the sidelines, Curt Miller is joined by first-year assistants Jennifer Roos and Brandi Poole ... Roos spent the last eight years as an assistant at Davidson, while Poole was at West Virginia last year.
BGSU is shooting .358 from the field, while opponents are shooting .400 through the first 26 games ... the Falcons have made 151 three-point field goals and are shooting .289 from beyond the arc, while the foes have 142 treys and a .326 pct. ... BGSU has a free-throw pct. of .698 to the opponents' .701 ... the Falcons have been outrebounded by a 44.8 to 38.2 margin in the first 26 contests.
BGSU is shooting .370 from the field in MAC games, and the Falcons have made 95 three-pointers (6.33 per game) and are shooting .324 from behind the arc and .687 from the free-throw line in league contests.
BGSU is 4-7 at home, 3-9 on the road and 1-2 in neutral-site contests in 2001-02 ... BG is 3-4 at home and 2-6 on the road in MAC games ... last year, the Falcons went 6-5 at Anderson Arena, 3-12 on the road and 2-1 in neutral-site affairs ... in league play, the Brown and Orange went 5-3 at home and 1-7 on the road last season.
SCOUTING EASTERN MICHIGAN: Eastern Michigan will enter Saturday's game with an overall record of 16-9 ... the Eagles will check into the contest with a 9-5 MAC mark, and Eastern is one of the hottest teams in the league, having won four consecutive games ... those wins include a pair of home victories over two teams currently tied for first place overall ... EMU posted a come-from-behind win over Ball State, 76-75, Saturday (Feb. 16) ... then, the Eagles led for most of the game in a 76-64 victory over Toledo Wednesday (Feb. 20) ... EMU is 7-5 on the road this season, including 3-4 in MAC away games ... the Eagles are shooting .450 from the field and are averaging 7.04 three-point field goals per game, good for second in the MAC in both categories ... individually, junior forward Abby Wiseman leads the team in scoring, with 13.1 points per game ... senior guard Stephanie Smiley is averaging 12.4 points, and has 7.5 rebounds and a team-high 5.2 assists per contest ... THE SERIES: The Falcons are the lone MAC team that does not have a losing record in an all-time series with a single conference opponent ... BG leads the all-time series with 10 of the 12 MAC foes (BGSU is tied with both Buffalo [4-4] and NIU [9-9]), and the Falcons hold a 35-9 advantage over Eastern Michigan ... but, EMU has won the last two games, and three of the last four overall meetings, including an 86-50 blowout in Ypsilanti in last year's only meeting (Feb. 21, 2001) ... prior to EMU's winning three of the last four games, the Falcons had won 16 in a row, and 33 of the previous 34 meetings ... BGSU is 20-3 all-time in home games vs. the Hurons/Eagles ... but, the Eagles captured the last meeting in Anderson Arena, 92-69 on Feb. 12, 2000 ... in that game, the Falcons trailed by a single point with 6:54 left, before EMU went on a game-ending 22-0 run ... only one of the last eight meetings has been decided by fewer than 12 points.
LAST TIME OUT: Sophomore Stefanie Wenzel's free throws with 23.2 seconds left proved to be the tying and go-ahead points as the Falcons posted a 57-56 road win vs. Ohio Tuesday night (Feb. 19) ... BG got double-digit performances from three sophomores, as point guard Lindsay Austin led the way with 14 points ... Austin also had a team-high seven rebounds, matching her career best ... Wenzel had 12 points, while Kelly Kapferer had 10 points in the contest ... Ohio's Lori Moorman led all scorers with 15 points before fouling out in the final minute, while both Cathy Szall and Erin Isbell had 13 points ... the Falcons started quickly, racing to an 8-2 lead ... BGSU led for the entire half, holding a 28-27 lead at the intermission ... the 'Cats came out fast in the second half, aided by three BG turnovers on the Falcons' first three possessions of the stanza ... Ohio opened the half on an 8-2 run, taking their first lead of the night on an Andrea Gay layup with 18:34 remaining ... the Bobcats led by as many as five points on three occasions, the last being at 39-34, but a three-pointer by junior Karen Stocz tied the contest at 39-all with 12:08 remaining ... the lead went back and forth, but Ohio took a three-point lead with 1:56 left ... OU got the ball back after a BG miss, but the Bobcats threw it away with 1:14 left ... then, Austin drew a foul and hit both ends of her one-and-one opportunity with 1:06 remaining, and the BG deficit was a single point ... the Bobcats drew a BG foul at the other end, and Moorman went to the line with 24.2 seconds left ... but, the Bobcat senior missed the front end, then was called for a foul against Wenzel on the rebound ... the BG sophomore went to the other end of the floor and hit the tying and go-ahead free throws with 23.2 seconds remaining ... the Bobcats played for the last shot, but the Falcon defense knocked the ball loose with less than 10 seconds on the clock ... Austin dove on the floor and grabbed the ball in a crowd, but was tied up for a jump ball with 4.6 ticks left, and the possession arrow favored Ohio ... the hosts got the inbounds pass to Szall, who was immediately surrounded by three Falcon defenders ... as she tried to dribble behind her back, Austin knocked the ball loose and corralled it as the buzzer sounded ... the Falcons shot .440 for the game, making 22-of-50 shots from the floor ... BGSU made 11-of-22 attempts (.500) in the second half ... the Bobcats shot .382 on the night ... BG went 4-of-11 (.364) from three-point range, while the hosts were just 4-of-23 (.174).
MORE NOTES AFTER THE OHIO GAME: BGSU has held the opponent under 60 points in seven games this year ... the Falcons held foes to less than 60 points in only eight games over the previous four seasons combined ... Tuesday's game featured seven ties and 13 lead changes, with every lead change and all but one tie coming in the second half ... the Falcons' .440 field-goal percentage was the team's second highest of the season, behind only the .444 FG pct. in the first Marshall game (Jan. 26) ... junior Rachal Hamilton played a career-high nine minutes, including the game's final 1:20 ... she had two points and an assist in the contest, and helped hold the Bobcats scoreless in that last minute and 20 seconds ... junior Karen Stocz made a key three-pointer in the second half in Athens ... the trey was her second of the year, and just the second of her BGSU career.
GO WEST: The EMU game marks BGSU's final regular-season contest as a member of the MAC's East Division ... in October, the MAC welcomed the University of Central Florida as a member for the sport of football only, beginning in 2002 ... the league placed UCF in the East Division ... BGSU is being moved to the West Division for all sports, beginning in the 2002-03 academic year.
BUSY STRETCH FOR THE FALCONS: The Ohio game ended a busy stretch for the Falcons ... Tuesday's contest was the third in a six-day span for the Brown and Orange ... BGSU hosted Western Michigan Thursday night (Feb. 14), then left Friday for Huntington, W. Va. ... then, after the Saturday (Feb. 16) game at Marshall, BGSU returned home in the wee hours of Sunday morning, and the team left Monday for a Tuesday (Feb. 19) contest at Ohio.
MJ FOR THREE: Junior Megan Jerome had a team-high 16 points at Marshall last Saturday (Feb. 16) ... that total represented a season high, and was just two points away from her career best ... Jerome was a perfect 3-for-3 from three-point land in the game ... after starting the season by going 4-of-26 from three-point range, Jerome made seven of her next nine long-range attempts before going 0-of-2 from three-point land at Ohio Tuesday.
LEARNING HOW TO WIN: The Falcons struggled in the years before Curt Miller arrived on campus ... in the last three seasons, BGSU posted an overall record of 35-49 ... this season, despite losing the team's top scorer (senior Francine Miller) to injury, coach Miller's teams have put together some solid efforts, particularly at home ... but, the Falcons are still learning how to sustain that effort over the entire 40 minutes.
In the seven MAC games at Anderson Arena, the Falcons have never trailed at the half ... but, BGSU has outscored the opponent in the second half just once (Marshall, Jan. 26) in those six contests, resulting in a 3-4 record in home conference games.
FIELD-GOAL PCT. DEFENSE IMPROVING: Under first-year coach Curt Miller, the Falcons have greatly improved in the area of field-goal percentage defense ... BGSU has a field-goal pct. defense of .400 this season ... that percentage, if the Falcons could maintain it, would be the fourth-best in school history, and the best since 1992-93 ... that '92-93 team limited opponents to a .399 FG pct. ... the school record is .348, set by the 1976-77 squad ... BGSU's current mark would be the second-lowest in the last 24 years.
FREE THROWS MAKE A DIFFERENCE: Free throws have made a difference in each of the last two games at Anderson Arena ... in the first Ohio game (Feb. 5), each team shot .351 from the floor and had 47 rebounds ... the visiting Bobcats, however, went 30-of-38 (.816) from the free-throw line, while the Falcons went 12-of-20 (.600) from the stripe ... Ohio held a 27-to-9 advantage in FTM in the game's first 40 minutes, and the Bobcats' last toss of regulation, with 14.5 seconds left, forced the overtime ... against Western Michigan (Feb. 14), the Falcons went to the line 11 times, making seven (.636), while WMU was 23-of-28 (.821) from the stripe ... the Broncos made 8-of-10 tosses in the last 1:37 of the game to extend a one-point lead into a nine-point win.
Additionally, free-throw shooting did not help the Falcons' cause at Marshall ... in a game that was a single-digits contest entering the final minute of play, the Brown and Orange missed a total of 10 free throws, going 13-of-23 (.565).
KEEPING 'EM OFF THE LINE: One of the keys to BGSU's win in the game at Ohio Tuesday (Feb. 19) was keeping the Bobcats off of the foul line ... in the Falcons' overtime loss in the teams' first meeting (Feb. 5), Ohio was 30-of-38 from the free-throw line ... in the rematch, OU made only one-third as many charity tosses, sinking 10 in 16 attempts ... BG went 12-of-20 in the first game and 9-of-13 in the second.
PAM BROWN: RHYMES (SORTA) WITH REBOUND: Redshirt sophomore Pam Brown has had 28 rebounds in the last two home games ... Brown had a career-high 14 rebounds vs. Ohio (Feb. 5) ... that total also represented a BGSU season high, and the most by a Falcon in over two years (since Sherry Kahle also had 14 vs. Central Michigan on Jan. 6, 2000) ... then, she matched that total in the WMU game (Feb. 14) ... Brown now has seven double-digit rebounding games in her career ... her status, however, is doubtful for the EMU game.
POHL POSITION: Sophomore point guard Emily Pohl played a career-high 27 minutes off the bench in the WMU game (Feb. 14), and made the most of her time ... Pohl set season bests with eight points, four assists and five rebounds, with the latter total representing a career standard ... she also set a career high with three field goals made, and her total of 13 FG attempted more than doubled her previous career best of six.
THE GOOD, THE BAD, THE UGLY: The Falcons shot a season-best .444 from the floor vs. Marshall (Jan. 26), and BGSU won the rebounding battle by nine, 44-35 ... it is probably not a coincidence, then, that the result was a 24-point win for the Brown and Orange, the largest margin of victory of the 2001-02 season ... that margin was the largest for BG in nearly two years, since an 86-50 home triumph over Northern Illinois on Feb. 7, 2000.
In the return match vs. Marshall (Feb. 16), the Falcons shot just .255 from the field, a season low ... BGSU shot just 6-for-26 (.231) in the second half, and MU held a 50-33 rebounding advantage ... again, not coincidentally, the result was a win for the Thundering Herd.
DOUBLE TROUBLE: Sophomore Stefanie Wenzel recorded the first double-double of her career in BG's win over Marshall (Jan. 26) ... Wenzel led the Falcons in scoring, with 19 points, and had a career-high 11 rebounds in the win ... redshirt sophomore Pam Brown had her first double-double of the year, and the third of her career, with 18 points and 14 boards vs. WMU (Feb. 14) ... the double-double was just the fourth of the year by a Falcon player ... sophomore Kelly Kapferer had the first two, with a 15-point, 10-rebound effort against Detroit (Nov. 20) and a 12-point, 10-board game vs. Yale (Dec. 27).
WENZEL AT HOME IN ANDERSON ARENA: Sophomore Stefanie Wenzel is averaging a team-best 16.2 points in the Falcons' 10 home games this year, and has a 17.6 average in the last nine games at Anderson Arena ... Wenzel has five 20-point games at home this season ... Wenzel, who entered the year with a single-game best of seven points, has had games of 30 (vs. UB), 25 (vs. Wright State), 23 (vs. IPFW) and two games of 20 points (vs. UA and OU) in Anderson this year ... in BGSU's seven MAC home games, Wenzel is averaging 16.1 points and 6.7 rebounds.
STEF'S SOPHOMORE SEASON: Sophomore Stefanie Wenzel has scored a total of 298 points this season, after scoring 36 points during all of her freshman campaign.
SUCCESS IN THE CLASSROOM: Falcon women's basketball student-athletes traditionally are strong in the classroom, and the past semester was no exception ... BGSU posted a 3.22 GPA for the fall 2001 semester, and the team's cumulative GPA currently stands at 3.11 ... a total of eight student-athletes had a GPA of over 3.40 in the fall ... six Falcons have a cumulative GPA of 3.31 or higher, led by junior Megan Jerome's perfect 4.00 GPA ... Stefanie Wenzel has a 3.93 GPA through the fall, while Emily Pohl has a 3.88 GPA ... in addition to Wenzel, two other BGSU starters have a GPA in excess of 3.50, as both sophomore Lindsay Austin and junior Kim Griech maintain a 3.58 cumulative GPA ... in all, 10 of the 14 student-athletes on the current roster have a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or better.
111 GAMES AND COUNTING: The Falcons have made at least one three-point field goal in every game during the past three-plus years ... in fact, BGSU now has drained a triple in each of the last 111 games, a school record ... the last time the Falcons were held without a trey was on March 1, 1998 ... the previous school record was 29-straight games on two occasions -- most recently, in the 1993-94 (last five games) and 1994-95 (first 24 games) seasons.
ANDER-RIFFIC! The Western Michigan game (Feb. 14) ended a long streak for the Falcons ... BGSU went 3-of-17 from three-point land vs. the Broncos, ending a string of 26 consecutive home games vs. MAC foes in which the Falcons had made at least five triples ... BG has hit 47 treys in this year's seven conference games at Anderson ... the Falcons made a total of 68 three-pointers in eight home MAC games last year ... in 1999-2000, the Falcons made an average of 11.75 three-point field goals per contest ... adding in the 2000 MAC Tournament first-round contest vs. Ohio, BGSU is still averaging 9.0 treys and shooting .403 (215-of-534) over the last 24 home games vs. MAC teams.
INJURY REPORT: The Falcons currently have two players sidelined ... senior Preseason All-MAC pick Francine Miller, who played in just four games this year, will miss the remainder of the season while appealing for a medical hardship ... she was injured early in the season's second game, and missed the next nine contests ... she returned to play in the first two MAC games.
Additionally, redshirt sophomore Pam Brown missed seven games earlier this season with a knee injury ... Brown is still bothered by that injury ... she did not make the trip to Athens, and likely will be sidelined for the EMU game as well.
EVERYONE'S A THREAT FROM LONG RANGE: A total of 11 different Falcons have made at least one three-point field goal this season ... junior Karen Stocz hit the first triple of her career vs. UWM (Dec. 8), four days after freshman Tene Lewis made her first collegiate trey at Butler (Dec. 4) ... also at Butler, junior Megan Jerome hit her first two three-pointers of the year ... last year, 11 different Falcons made at least one long-range shot, and 10 of those players had drained a "three" by the fifth game of the year ... a total of 10 different players hit a trey in 1999-2000, as well as in 1998-99 ... prior to that time, the most players to hit a triple in the same season was seven.
A TALE OF TWO HALVES: Through 26 games, the Falcons have held the opponent to a field-goal percentage of .359 (284-of-791) in the first half ... when the Colorado game is taken out, BG has limited the foes to a .348 rate (261-of-751) before the intermission ... in the second half, however, the opponents have made 336-of-766 shots from the floor (.439).
60 ON "D" IS (USUALLY) KEY: The Falcons had won 93 consecutive games over an 18-year span when holding the opposition to less than 60 points, but that streak came to an end on Dec. 27 ... on that date, BGSU lost to Yale despite allowing just 51 points ... the last Falcon loss in such a situation had come early in the 1983-84 season, in a 59-47 loss at Indiana.
60 ON "D" IS ... NEVER MIND: The Falcons, after winning those 93 consecutive games when limiting the opponents to fewer than 60 points, then lost three of the next five such games ... Northern Illinois scored just 56 points on Jan. 9, but held BG to 52 ... BGSU got back on the right track on Jan. 26, holding Marshall to 52 points in a 24-point win ... but, in the rematch vs. MU, the Falcons lost despite limiting the Herd to just 56 markers (56-43, Feb. 16) ... the Falcons are 4-3 this year when holding the opponent below 60 points.
HOLDING 'EM BELOW 60, PART III: The Falcons held Yale and Lehigh to 51 and 55 points, respectively, on consecutive nights in late December ... the Falcons had not held back-to-back opponents to under 60 points since January of 1997 ... over the last week, BGSU turned the trick again, holding Marshall (Feb. 16) and Ohio (Feb. 19) to 56 points apiece ... ironically, BGSU went 1-1 in both of those two-game sets.
In the decade of the 1990s, the Falcons went a perfect 46-0 when holding foes to 60 points or less ... in the history of the program, the Falcons now have a record of 169-13 when holding the opponent to less than 60 points ... nine of those 13 losses came prior to the 1980-81 season ... BG is 115-4 (.966) in such games over the last 21-plus seasons ... three of those four losses have come this year.
TRIPLE YOUR FUN: Several players on the 2001-02 Falcon roster are ranked among the BGSU career three-point leaders Francine Miller is second on the all-time school list for career three-point percentage (.425, 128-of-301) sophomore Stefanie Wenzel is eighth on that list (.355, 38-of-107), with senior Dana Western-Schuka in 10th place (.346, 85-of-246) ... junior Kim Griech has a career three-point pct. of .336 (112-of-333) ... Miller is third all-time in three-pointers made, while Griech is fourth and Western-Schuka sixth ... Griech has passed Miller to move into third place in three-point attempts, with Western-Schuka seventh.
