NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Senior pitchers Andrea Genter and Jessie Milosek combined on a no-hitter as the Bowling Green State University softball team opened the 2002 season with a 6-0 win at Tennessee State Friday (Feb. 22). The game, the first half of a doubleheader, was held at Lady Tiger Field.
The Falcons and Lady Tigers were scoreless through four innings, but BG broke on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth. Senior Holly Frantz led off the inning with a walk, and freshman Sara "Sam" Moore sacrificed her to second. Sophomore Jody Johnson singled to plate Frantz with BGSU's first run of the year.
Johnson took second on a grounder by redshirt freshman Marla Murphy, then scored on a single to right-center by Kandice Machain.
In the sixth inning, the Falcons broke the game open with three more runs. Junior Crystal Wilson had a one-out triple, her first of two triples in the game, and scored on a Frantz single. Then, pinch-runner Sara Edwards took second on a wild pitch, and went to third on Moore's infield single. Murphy beat out a bunt single, and Edwards scored on a throwing error by the TSU first baseman. Moore eventually scored on a wild pitch.
The final run came with two outs in the seventh. Junior Libby Voshell singled and came around to score on Wilson's second triple.
Meanwhile, the Falcon hurlers were keeping the TSU bats quiet. Genter allowed a leadoff walk in the second, and hit the leadoff hitter in the fourth. In that fourth frame, the Lady Tigers advanced the runner as far as third base on a BG error and a stolen base, but the threat ended there.
Milosek came on to start the fifth inning, and faced just one batter over the minimum. That batter reached on a Falcon error with one out in the sixth.
Genter earned the win with her four innings of work, while Milosek picked up a save. Genter struck out three and walked one batter, while Milosek fanned one and did not issue a walk.
Tennessee State dropped to 2-5 on the season. Tarah Evanisko allowed nine hits and four earned runs in a complete-game pitching effort for the Lady Tigers.
