COOKEVILLE, Tenn. - A seven-run fifth inning by the University of Louisville gave the Cardinals the lead for good in a 7-5 win over the Bowling Green State University softball team. The game, BGSU's second in the Worth/Icebreaker Tournament hosted by Tennessee Tech, was played at the Cane Creek Complex.
UL improved to 3-7 with the win, while the loss dropped BGSU's record to 2-2 on the young season.
The Falcons drew first blood, scoring three times with two outs in the bottom of the first inning. Junior Kandice Machain and sophomore Jody Johnson had back-to-back singles to start the inning, and junior Libby Voshell reached on a one-out fielder's choice that saw Machain retired at third. Junior Crystal Wilson then singled to load the bases, and both Johnson and Voshell scored on a double by Natalie Phillips. Then, freshman Sara "Sam" Moore singled to plate Wilson, but Phillips was cut down trying to score. Five of BGSU's 10 hits for the game came in that first inning.
BGSU senior Jessie Milosek blanked the Cardinals on a total of six hits through the first four innings, but UL came to life in the fifth off junior reliever McKenna Houle. The first two batters each singled and took second on BG errors. After a walk and a fielder's choice, the next UL batter reached on yet another BG miscue. That plated a run and made the score 3-2, Falcons. But, the Cards' Jodi Thomas walked to load the bases for Lisa Estes, who cleared them with a three-run double that gave UL the lead for good.
The Cardinals scored twice more, as Shannon Nord singled to score Estes, and eventually scored on a wild pitch.
BGSU rallied in the seventh inning, scoring twice and bringing the potential winning run to the plate. Redshirt freshman Marla Murphy singled and was erased on a Machain fielder's choice. Sophomore Jenifer Kernahan doubled to score Machain. Senior Renee Rosemeier's grounder was the second out of the inning, with Kernahan taking third. Voshell then singled to score Kernahan, and Wilson reached on an error, with Voshell advancing to third. But, UL hurler Krystle Herold got a fly-ball out to end the game.
Houle suffered the loss, her first decision of the year, for the Falcons, allowing seven runs (only one earned run). Milosek threw six-and-two-thirds innings, allowing six hits and no runs. She walked two batters and struck out four. UL's Herold pitched seven innings and allowed 10 hits. She walked two and fanned three.
Senior catcher Holly Frantz had two hits for BGSU, while eight of the other Falcon players that batted in the game had one apiece. Both Kenzie Meisenburg and Keola Calderon had two hits for the Cards.
The Falcons conclude tournament action with Sunday (Feb. 24) games vs. Virginia and host TTU.
