NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Bowling Green State University softball team got five runs in the top of the first inning en route to a 9-1 win over Tennessee State Friday (Feb. 22). The game, the second half of a doubleheader, was held at Lady Tiger Field.
With the win, the Falcons completed a sweep of the twinbill and improved to 2-0 on the season. TSU drops to 2-6.
Senior Rebekah Tipton threw four innings of two-hit ball, allowing just one unearned run. Junior McKenna Houle worked the fifth and final inning, surrendering one hit and striking out two.
BGSU started the scoring quickly against TSU hurler Shannon Hicks. Junior Kandice Machain led off the game with a double, took third on a wild pitch and scored on a single by sophomore Candace Fenton. Then, senior Renee Rosemeier's single moved Fenton to third, before junior Libby Voshell doubled to plate Fenton and move Rosemeier to third.
Then, sophomore Jenifer Kernahan singled to score Rosemeier, with Voshell moving to third. After Kernahan stole second, senior Holly Frantz reached on an error to load the bases. Freshman Sara "Sam" Moore singled down the right-field line to plate two runners. TSU retired the next three batters, but the damage had been done.
Tipton gave up a leadoff double in the bottom of the inning, but got an inning-ending double play.
The Lady Tigers did plate one run, an unearned tally, in the second. Denna Miller led off with a walk, and Timeka Coulter's sacrifice bunt was misplayed for an error. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch, and the bases were loaded when DeAundrea Minor reached on another error. Tipton struck out the next two batters, but Miller scored on a two-out wild pitch. Tipton then fanned her third consecutive hitter to end the inning.
BG got that run back in the third. Kernahan drew a leadoff walk, took second on a groundout by Frantz and went to third on a TSU error. Then, she came home when sophomore Liz Tuza reached on another error.
In the fourth, BG took a 7-1 lead on a Fenton single and a Rosemeier double. The Falcons completed the scoring with a pair of runs in the fifth off reliever Sabrina Smiley. Moore walked and took second on a Tuza single. Both runners moved up on a wild pitch, and Tuza scored when Machain reached on a fielder's choice. A throwing error on the play allowed Moore to come around and score as well.
Houle sandwiched a pair of batters around a strikeout in the bottom of the fifth, then got Antionette Armstrong to ground back to the pitcher's circle to end the game.
Fenton and Rosemeier each had two hits as part of the Falcons' 10-hit attack, and Moore had the first two runs batted in of her collegiate career.
Tipton walked just one batter and struck out five in earning the victory.
The Falcons will be back in action Saturday (Feb. 23), beginning action in the Worth/Icebreaker Tournament hosted by Tennessee Tech. BGSU is scheduled to play two Saturday and two Sunday games in the tournament.
