COOKEVILLE, Tenn. - Host Tennessee Tech University scored nine times in the first three innings, including a six-spot in the third, to post a 9-1 victory over the Bowling Green State University softball team Sunday afternoon (Feb. 24). The game, BGSU's final contest in the Worth/Icebreaker Tournament, was held at the Tech Softball Field.
The loss dropped the Falcons to 2-4 on the season. After posting a Friday (Feb. 22) doubleheader sweep at Tennessee State to open the campaign, the Brown and Orange went 0-4 at TTU's tourney.
The game started well for BGSU, as the Falcons took an early lead in the top of the first. Sophomore Candace Fenton had a one-out double, and came home on a two-out single by junior Libby Voshell. Voshell had three of the Falcons' six hits in the game.
The Golden Eagles tied the score in the bottom of the first on a walk, a sacrifice bunt and a double. Then, in the second, a leadoff double, another sac bunt and a groundout produced another TTU run off senior Rebekah Tipton, and the hosts added an unearned run on a two-out BG error.
In the third inning, the hosts scored six times off sophomore reliever Jody Johnson. A walk and a bunt single started the inning, but the Falcons got an out on a fielder's choice. Then, after a single loaded the bases, Johnson got a strikeout for the second out of the inning. But, the next TTU batter walked to force a run home, and the next two batters singled. On the latter hit, another BGSU error allowed two runs to score.
Senior Andrea Genter came on to pitch, and allowed a pair of RBI singles before getting the final out of the inning.
In addition to Voshell's three hits, Fenton, sophomore Liz Tuza and senior HOlly Frantz had safeties for the Brown and Orange. Two of Voshell's hits were doubles.
Tipton took the loss, allowing four hits and two earned runs in two innings of work. Lori Bayless picked up the win with four innings of one-run, four-hit ball.
The Falcons will return to action next weekend (March 1-3), heading to Charlottesville, Va., for the Cavalier Classic hosted by the University of Virginia.
