BGSU Defeats Buffalo, 73-58

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -

The Falcons' 73-58 victory over Buffalo, coupled with Toledo's 69-68 win at Ohio, clinched a first-round bye for BGSU for the MAC Tournament ... the Falcons are now 12-5 in MAC play, two games up on both OU and UT (10-7) with one game to play ... BGSU will be the third seed for the 13-team tourney, and will play a quarterfinal game against an opponent to be determined on Thursday, March 7, at 9:00 p.m. ... that game will be held at Gund Arena in Cleveland.

The game was "Senior Night" for the Falcons, and coach Dan Dakich and each of the four seniors on the BGSU team -- Brent Klassen, Len Matela, Keith McLeod and Brandon Pardon -- addressed the crowd following the game ... the four seniors combined to score 63 of BGSU's 73 points on the night, as Matela led the way with 21 points, and McLeod had 19 ... Pardon had 17 and Klassen added six.

The Falcons now have an overall record of 22-6 on the season ... that win total ties the 2001-02 team for the sixth highest in school history ... BGSU has reached 22 wins for the second time in three years, having gone 22-8 in 1999-2000 ... the 1996-97 team also won 22 games, going 22-10 on the year ... the Falcons have not won more than 22 games in a season since the 1948-49 campaign (24-7) ... the school record for wins is 28, set in 1946-47 (28-7).

McLeod's 19 points on the night give him a total of 1,752 for his career ... he passed James Darrow (1,740 points from 1957-60) to move into fourth place on the BGSU career scoring list ... McLeod's next target is Antonio Daniels, who had 1,789 points (1993-97) ... Matela's 21 points vs. UB give him a total of 1,439 points for his career ... he is now 13th all-time at BG, having moved past Shane Kline-Ruminski (1,427 points from 1992-95) ... next on the list for Matela is Al Bianchi (1,487 points from 1952-54).

The Falcons' total of 77 wins over the last four seasons is the most in a four-year span since BG won a total of 98 games from 1946-50.

BGSU will close the regular season with a Saturday (March 2) game at Ohio University ... that contest will begin at approximately 3:00 p.m. ... the game will be the second half of a BGSU-OU doubleheader, as the Falcon women's basketball team will face their Bobcat counterparts in a MAC Tournament First-Round game, beginning at 12:30 p.m. ... the Falcon Club is sponsoring a bus to Athens on Saturday ... Since the 1998-99 season, the Falcons have a 47-7 record in "The House That Roars," Anderson Arena ... that record includes a 30-6 ledger against the MAC ... BGSU has won 10 games or more at home in four consecutive seasons, going 13-1 at Anderson this year.

The Falcons improve their record to 8-0 vs. Buffalo in the all-time series between the teams.

McLeod went 2-for-2 from the free-throw line vs. the Bulls, giving him a career total of 514 free throws made ... he needs just two more to move into a tie for the school record in that category ... Howard Komives (1962-64) and Anthony Stacey (1996-2000) share that mark with 516 FTM apiece.

McLeod's 19 points give him a total of 612 for the season, the fifth-highest total in school history ... Tommy Harris is fourth on that list, with 624 points in 1976-77 ... Komives holds the school record, with 844 points -- an incredible 36.7 points per game -- in the 1963-64 campaign.
