BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -
BGSU HEAD COACH CURT MILLER:
(On who BGSU wanted to take the last shot at the end of the second half:) "It's a tough call with this team, with 14.5 seconds left, because we pride ourselves on being a team. When OU absolutely needed a basket or a go-to play, they went to one of their two seniors. You just knew, if they were gonna go inside, they were gonna go to (Lori) Moorman, if they were gonna go outside, they were gonna go to (Cathy) Szall. And, the seniors stepped up and made big plays."
"We have different options. Do you go to Stefanie (Wenzel) because she's hot? Do you run a play for Kim (Griech) for redemption, because she wants to win the game because she made a mistake? Do you let Lindsay (Austin) make a play off the dribble, and hope that she can get to the basket? Or, do you run a play and get a shot for your senior (Dana Western-Schuka) late in the game? And, ironically, we did get a shot with our senior. You can't ask for more, she's been through more battles at this level than anyone else. So, it was not necessarily the play we drew up, but getting a shot for Dana didn't bother me, and then the effort to get to the offensive glass to give you a second-chance shot at the end of regulation is what you can hope for."
"We got off two shots. It wasn't exactly the play we diagrammed, but to our credit, we stepped up confidently, took that first shot, and attacked the glass and got another shot at the buzzer."
"Overall, it was a great college game. It wasn't a fan-friendly game at times, there were a lot of fouls and foul shots, and there was trouble getting into a flow. But, you can't ask for a better atmosphere. It was one of our better crowds on the year, and we had a close game that goes into overtime. I enjoyed coaching in it, because every play was so important, and every call, defensively or offensively, you felt like could win or lose the game. That has to be a fun game to play in, and it's absolutely a fun game to coach."
"Ohio came into this game with eight wins, and three of those eight wins were overtime wins. They were three-and-oh in overtime games, and, of course, they make the big play to tie the game at the end of regulation, so they have all the momentum. And, I just don't feel like (we were able) to step up in that situation, stay positive, and wipe out what happened in the last 30 seconds of regulation. They had more confidence and all the momentum. But, that's what seniors can do for you. (Cathy) Szall and (Lori) Moorman are great players. And, Moorman just is so physical. One of our keys to the game was to keep them off the foul line, and she alone goes there 16 times. I thought we had trouble competing with her physical play."
"On our side, I thought a lot of people played well. Stefanie really battled, and found ways to score, as she has all year. Pam Brown had a great game battling with Moorman, and got 14 rebounds. That was a phenomenal effort. Lindsay and Kim both reached double figures, even though I think they were both disappointed with how they shot the ball. Overall, I was pleased with our play. "
"We were one stop away from being in sole possession of third place (in the East Division). We're 14 seconds away from being in third place, a game out of second place since Miami and Buffalo both lost tonight, and maybe the best story of our success. I know the success of the football and men's basketball teams, and volleyball won a championship, but no one would have predicted that this program, minus the graduating class of Afra (Smith), Angie (Farmer) and (Jackie) Adlington, and without Brown (for seven games) and without (senior) Francine (Miller) for the bulk of the season, would have had a chance to be playing for second place with five games left in the regular season."
"Unfortunately, now we're in a tie for fourth place, and OU has leapfrogged us. We still have all the opportunity to play for third place in the East. But, if we don't regroup and battle in the last five games, we could drop to sixth place. There's still a lot to play for."
"I thought they were going to trap our ball screens the entire game. I'm proud of our kids -- our goal, going into the game, was to turn over the ball 15 times or less -- and against a very aggressive, changing, multiple-defensive-scheme type of team that really comes at you with traps, we only turned the ball over 15 times. I thought we really handled it. But, it definitely took us out of our flow. We didn't necessarily turn the ball over, but we didn't get the looks, and we never attacked their trap the way we wanted to."
OHIO HEAD COACH LYNN BRIA:
"In the first half, I thought our effort was good, but our execution left a lot to be desired. We turned the ball over entirely too much, and they did a good job getting to the basket against our halfcourt defense. In the second half, we came out and trapped them, and I thought it disrupted their offense a little bit. We might not have gotten a turnover, but I don't feel like they got to the basket as well in the second half as they did in the first half."
"We're a pressing team. We didn't face-guard a whole bunch today, because we've got some kids who are injured, and we're not as deep today. But, I feel like, any time you can press, you're in the game as long as their is time on the clock. You have the potential to win the game. And, we can hit 'three's'. So, as long as there's time, we have the possibility of winning the game."
"We love for it to go to an overtime. For some reason, our players play well -- we're 100% on overtimes this year. So, I felt that, if we could just get it to an overtime, we'd have a good chance to win."
