The Bowling Green Gymnastics team has seen a great deal of success over the past few weeks. Included in that success was a 5-0 record after defeating five squads at the Ball State Cardinal Classic on January 25. One of those teams was the University of North Carolina. This weekend, the Tarheels host BG and George Washington University in Chapel Hill where the Falcons hope to continue their streak of nine wins in a row.
BG will look to senior leadership this weekend to help sustain the Falcons perfect 9-0 overall mark. Marny Oestreng has won the all-around event in three of the last four meets and was named Mid-American Conference Gymnast of the Week for the ninth time in her BG career this past week. Fellow senior Mindy Untch will look to make an impact on the bars event, as that is the Falcon's strongest event thus far. Untch tied for 1st place in the event with a score of 9.850 in BG's home meet against Central Michigan on January 19.
Other Falcons to watch are junior Ann Marie Kassouf, who placed 3rd in the all-around (38.075) last weekend at Rutgers and freshmen Kristin DiPietro and Kari Elste, both tied for second place in their respective events. DiPietro scored a 9.675 on the vault and Elste earned a 9.825 on the bars.
Head Coach Dan Connelly expects his squad to perform well this weekend, but he also is realistic about the Falcon's opponents. "North Carolina will be a much tougher opponent this weekend than they were less than two weeks ago. It should be a little more difficult to beat them at home. They are a strong squad, as is George Washington."
The Falcons will travel south this weekend but will return home next week on Friday, February 15 to face MAC opponent Northern Illinois at 7 p.m..
