ORLANDO, Fla. - Junior Libby Voshell had three hits, including two doubles, and knocked in the winning run as the Bowling Green State University softball team defeated Yale University, 6-5, Wednesday (March 13). The eight-inning game, BGSU's sixth in the Rebel Spring Games, was held in Orlando, Fla.
The Falcons improve to 5-7 on the season with the win.
Much like Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman, or Tom Green and Drew Barrymore, it was splitsville for the Brown and Orange. BGSU went 1-1 for the third consecutive day at the Rebel Spring Games, having lost a one-run decision to Austin Peay earlier on Wednesday.
Against Yale, the Falcons fell behind early. The Bulldogs scored twice in the top of the first inning. Then Yale scored two more times in the top of the fifth to double the lead. BGSU got a run back in the bottom half of that frame to cut the deficit to 4-1.
BGSU responded with a three-run sixth inning, but the Bulldogs got a single run in the eighth. Again, however, the Falcons would rally.
With the international tiebreaker rule utilized for extra innings in the Rebel Spring Games, senior Holly Frantz was placed on second base to start the inning. Sophomore Jenifer Kernahan reached on an error, sending Frantz to third, before Frantz stole home to tie the game. Senior Natalie Phillips then reached on a fielder's choice, with Kernahan erased for the first out of the inning. After a grounder produced the second out of the frame, redshirt freshman Marla Murphy struck out, but reached base safely on a Yale error. Then, with runners on first and third, Voshell doubled to plate Phillips end the contest.
Senior Jessie Milosek got the win for the Brown and Orange, upping her record to 2-1 on the year.
At the plate, Voshell's three hits led a BGSU 10-hit attack.
Another junior, Kandice Machain, went 2-for-5 with a double in the game. Machain has had four multiple-hit games in the six contests in Florida.
BGSU will return to action with a pair of Thursday (March 14) games, celebrating coach Lena Richards' birthday with games vs. Bucknell and Tennessee Martin.
