CLEVELAND, Ohio - Bowling Green State University's Sara "Sam" Moore has been named the Mid-American Conference Player of the Week for the sport of softball, the league office announced. Moore earns the honor for the first time in her collegiate career.
Moore, a freshman second baseman, hit a team-best .667 as the Falcons went 3-0 last week. Moore, in the first home games of her collegiate career, reached base seven times in nine plate appearances as the Brown and Orange opened MAC play with a sweep of visiting Marshall. She led the Falcons in runs scored in the series, with four, and also paced the team in slugging pct. (1.167), on-base pct. (.778) and walks (three).
In two of the three games, Moore reached base in every plate appearance. The Greenville, Ohio, native was 1-for-1 with two walks, two runs scored and a stolen base in Saturday's (March 23) opener. The next day, Moore went 3-for-3 with a double and her first collegiate triple. The three-bagger drove in two runs to tie the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the sixth, and she eventually scored what proved to be the winning run in a 5-3 victory.
Moore is the second consecutive Falcon to be named East Division Player of the Week by the league office. Last week, junior shortstop Libby Voshell earned the honor for the first time in her collegiate career.
In addition to Moore's honor, Ohio's Val Wood was named the East Division Pitcher of the Week. Western Michigan's Angie Fiero and Central Michigan's Wendy Stephens earned Player- and Pitcher-of-the-Week honors, respectively, for the West Division.
The Falcons, 10-9 overall and 3-0 in the MAC, saw Tuesday's (March 26) scheduled game at Michigan postponed due to inclement weather. The team's Wednesday (March 27) home doubleheader likely will be postponed as well. The Falcons are slated to continue MAC play with a weekend series at Kent State. The teams are scheduled to play a single game Friday (March 29), beginning at 3:00 p.m., followed by a Saturday (March 30) doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m. All three games are scheduled to be played at the Kent State Softball Field.
