Ypsilanti, Mich. - Bowling Green scored often and scored early in the first game of a Easter Sunday doubleheader at Eastern Michigan, resulting in a 17-3 victory at Oestrike Stadium. The win snapped a five-game losing streak and was the first win in Mid-American Conference action.
The Falcons struck in the first inning when Corey Loomis singled in Tim Newell from second base, who reached after doubling into right-center field, for a 1-0 BGSU lead.
Freshman right-hander Tyler Saneholtz hit the first batter he faced, Brian Bixler, and then walked the second batter Tony Palazzolo. BGSU coach Danny Schmitz argued the free pass with home plate umpire Chad Clore and was ejected in the bottom of the first inning. Saneholtz got the next batter to ground into a double play and then got the final batter to ground out to shortstop Nick Elrod to keep the Eagles in check.
The Falcons added to their one-run lead in the second inning when sophomore Nate Henschen hit his second two-run homer of the series, scoring Len Elias, for a 3-0 BGSU lead. However, EMU avoided more runs by getting Corey Loomis to end the inning with a strike out and the bases loaded. EMU bounced back with three runs in the bottom of the second inning off of two hit batsmen and three walks by Saneholtz, including two with the bases loaded, to knot the score at 3-3.
BGSU came back with its biggest inning of the season, sending 17 batters to the plate and finishing with 11 runs to take a 14-3 lead in the third inning. Andy Hudak began the inning with a double to right-center and scored on a Len Elias single. Henschen then brought home Elias with a double to right field. David Barkholz walked to load the bases one out later before an errant throw by EMU third baseman Derrick Peterson brought home Henschen. Two bases-loaded walks by Tom Gallus plated two more BGSU runs. A two-run single by Loomis, two-run double by Hudak and one-run single by Elias followed. Henschen scored the final run of the Falcon barrage after Nick Elrod was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Saneholtz cruised the rest of the way with the big lead, earning his first collegiate win in six innings of work. He allowed three earned runs while walking six and striking out two. Senior Brad Henry pitched the final inning, allowing three walks but no runs.
Hunt hit a solo home run in the sixth and Newell added a two-run bomb to left field to close out the scoring for BGSU. Sophomore David Barkholz stole his eighth-straight base this season without being caught, and 10th in a row in his career.
