Bowling Green, Ohio - With Miami University and Ohio State splitting their series in the final week of the regular season, Bowling Green won the 2002 Ohio Cup by virtue of a tiebreaker.
After defeating Miami (Ohio) 4-1 on Feb. 25 in Columbus, Ohio State needed a win or tie in the regular-season finale March 1 at Miami to secure the 2002 Ohio Cup.
But after Miami prevailed with a 3-1 victory, Bowling Green was the surprise winner of the cup.
This marks the 20th season that Buckeye Sports Bulletin has presented the Ohio Cup to the Ohio-based CCHA team that amasses the most points in selected games against its fellow Ohio-based CCHA schools.
This year's cup competition was among the tightest ever as the three teams all tied at 2-2-0 against each other. The tiebreaker came down to the best goal differential in Ohio Cup games.
Bowling Green, buoyed by a 9-4 win over Miami on Nov. 9, won that tiebreaker with a goal differential of plus-3 in its Ohio Cup games. BG ended the regular season 9-23-6 overall and 7-18-3 in CCHA play.
Ohio State (17-15-1, 12-12-4 CCHA) was second in the tiebreaker with an even goal differential, while Miami (12-20-2, 9-17-2 CCHA) ended up at minus-3.
BSB has sponsored the Ohio Cup since 1983. Miami claimed the cup last year for the fifth time. BG has now won it 12 times, including eight straight years from 1984-91. OSU has won it three times, most recently in 2000.
The Falcons travel to Michigan State this weekend for first-round action in the CCHA Tournament (March 8-10).
