Although the 2001 Falcon volleyball season has been over for nearly five months, honors continue to accumulate for several members of the squad. Last weekend, the team honored individual players at the sport's annual banquet for their achievements both on the court and in the classroom.
Performance awards were given to seven team members for their contributions in the fall season. The 2001 Most Improved Player Award was given to redshirt-sophomore Bridget Protas. Fellow sophomore Sara Sikorski was awarded the Hustle Award while freshman Melissa Mohr was named the team's Rookie of the Year.
Three of the squad's six seniors were recognized for both their performance and their leadership over the past season. Singapore native Kate Yeo, one of the team's defensive specialists, was given the Coach's Award. Both the Offensive and Defensive Player of the Year Awards were given to the same individual. Senior middle hitter Caty Rommeck, now training with the U.S. Women's National Team in Colorado Springs, was awarded both for her contributions.
The Most Valuable Player Award was also named, but was shared by Rommeck and senior setter Natalie Becker.
Along with peformance awards, the players were also recognized for their academic prowess as well. Nine memebers of the squad were named to the Mid-American Conference Honor Roll. The Falcons' nine honorees are the most of any conference school. Seniors Natalie Becker (3.22 grade point average/pre-medicine [biology]), Caty Rommeck (3.12/special education [mild moderate intervention specialist]), Amber Vorst (3.78/communication disorders) and Kate Yeo (3.60/international business), redshirt junior Kristin Gamby (3.35/accounting), redshirt sophomore Laura Twyman (4.00/accounting), sophomores Susie Norris (3.84/elementary education) and Sara Sikorski (3.56/psychology) and redshirt freshman Bridget Protas (3.60/pre-medicine [dentistry]) all were named to the team. Becker, Gamby and Vorst become the first-ever Falcons to be named to the Honor Roll three times. The MAC Honor Roll is in its third year of existence. Twyman and Yeo both earn the honor for the second time in their respective careers.
Other academic awards were given to players who maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA over the competitive fall semester. Five Falcons were given this award including seniors Becker, Amstutz, and Vorst and sophomores Norris and Twyman.
The Falcons were 21-8 in 2001 and earned their second consecutive East Division Championship Title.
