OXFORD, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University softball team outhit Miami University in each game of Saturday's (April 13) doubleheader, but left eight runners on base in each contest as the host RedHawks posted a sweep of the twinbill. MU won by scores of 1-0 and 5-3 in the Mid-American Conference DH at RedHawk Diamond.
The Falcons, now 13-20-1 overall and 4-9 in the MAC, outhit the host team by a 6-2 margin in the opener, and got a gem of a pitching performance from senior Jessie Milosek. But, Miami (14-28, 6-8 MAC) capitalized on one of Milosek's few mistakes, as Angie Gerber hit a two-out homerun to centerfield in the bottom of the first inning.
Milosek would allow only two more baserunners in the game. Nicki Pelfrey, the next batter after Gerber's homer, reached on an error, and Jacque Molinaro singled in the second inning. Milosek retired the final 13 RedHawk batters of the game. But, her counterpart, MU's Jackie Poggendorf, did not let any Falcons cross the plate.
BGSU had had a good scoring opportunity in the first inning. With one out, senior Natalie Phillips and junior Libby Voshell had back-to-back singles up the middle. Poggendorf got a strikeout for the second out, but senior Holly Frantz lined a sharp single to left. The ball reached the outfield too quickly, however, for Phillips to attempt to score. With the bases loaded, Poggendorf got another strikeout to end the threat.
The Falcons had runners on second and third with two outs in the fourth inning, courtesy of a hit by sophomore Jenifer Kernahan and two RedHawk errors. But, Poggendorf again got a strikeout to end the frame. The freshman had eight strikeouts in her six-hit shutout effort.
Milosek fanned five MU batters in her complete-game outing. Like Poggendorf, she did not issue a walk.
All six of BGSU's hits in the game were singles. Voshell had the lone multiple-hit outing, going 2-for-3.
Runs, so hard to come by in the first game, came fast and furious in the second contest. The teams combined to score all eight of the game's runs in the first two innings.
BGSU jumped on the board right away, with a first-inning marker. Phillips had a one-out single and immediately stole second, one of a season-high five thefts for the Falcons. BGSU entered the day with 14 SB's on the season, but the Falcons stole six bases in Saturday's twinbill.
With Phillips on second, Voshell ripped an RBI single to left to put the Falcons on the scoreboard.
The RedHawks rallied quickly, with three runs in the bottom of the inning off junior McKenna Houle. Jessica Zogaib had a one-out single, then Gerber singled on a hit-and-run play. The BGSU throw from the outfield skipped past third base, allowing Zogaib to score, with Gerber taking second on the play. Then, Pelfrey hit the next pitch over the left-field fence for a two-run homer, giving MU a 3-1 lead.
The next three RedHawk batters also reached base, on a walk, a single and a hit-by-pitch. But, with the bases loaded and one out, Houle got Sarah Buffie to hit a grounder that shortstop Voshell grabbed. She whirled and fired to Frantz for the force play at the plate. Houle retired the next batter to end the threat.
The Falcons tied the contest in the top of the second inning. Freshman Sam Moore ripped a single down the first-base line, and promptly stole second. Sophomore Jody Johnson hit a double into the gap in left-center to plate Moore. After a strikeout, junior Kandice Machain's two-out single scored Johnson.
In the bottom of the frame, however, Gerber hit a two-out single, and Pelfrey followed with her second homer of the game as MU regained a two-run advantage. Neither team would score the rest of the way.
The Falcons had some scoring chances in the latter innings, however. In the third, junior Crystal Wilson lashed a two-out double to the base of the wall in left-center. The next batter, Frantz, ripped a ball up the middle that struck Poggendorf on the lower leg. The pitcher picked up the ball and threw to first for the third out.
In the fourth, redshirt freshman Marla Murphy beat out a bunt for a single, before stealing second and advancing to third when the throw was wild. But, Poggendorf induced Machain to fly out to right to end the inning.
BGSU got a leadoff single from Phillips in the seventh, but she could advance no further.
The Falcons had an 11-7 advantage in the hits department in the second game, with Moore, Murphy, Phillips and Rosemeier each collecting a pair of hits. For the hosts, Pelfrey and Gerber each had two hits, with Pelfrey driving in four runs.
Poggendorf picked up her second win of the day, allowing 11 hits but just three runs in the complete-game outing. She did not walk a batter in the twinbill, and had one strikeout in the nightcap.
Houle allowed seven hits in her complete game, but suffered the loss. She walked one batter and struck out five.
Poggendorf now has 20 complete games on the year, and has appeared in 35 of her team's games.
The Falcons and RedHawks will complete the weekend series with a single game Sunday (April 14) at 1:00 p.m.
