BUFFALO, N.Y. - Two members of the Bowling Green State University men's tennis program have been honored by their peers around the Mid-American Conference. BGSU head coach Jay Harris has been named the 2002 MAC Coach of the Year, while junior Geoff Hiscox was named the MAC Player of the Year. The league's specialty awards were announced Saturday (April 27) at the MAC Championships in Buffalo, N.Y.
Harris earned his award after guiding the Falcons to a 19-11 record and the regular-season league crown. The title was the third in school history for BGSU, but the second in the last three years for Harris-coached teams.
Harris has a six-year head-coaching mark of 91-62 (.595) in dual-match play, including a MAC mark of 26-10 (.722). After guiding last year's team to 19 wins, the most dual victories since 1978-79, he and the Falcons matched that win total this season. The 38 wins in the last two seasons marks the second-highest two-year total in school history (41 from 1977-78 to 1978-79).
The 91 wins by Harris places him second in school history, trailing only Bob Gill, who went 232-201 in 20 years.
Harris is the third Falcon head coach to win the C-O-Y award, and the first to be named the sole recipient. Dave Morin shared the award in 1994, while Gill earned a share of the honor in 1982.
Hiscox, a native of London, Ontario, has a 23-11 singles record and a doubles mark of 24-12 this season. In MAC regular-season play, he went undefeated in both singles and doubles play.
Hiscox was named the MAC Player of the Week twice in 2001-02, most recently on Tuesday (April 23) after going a perfect 5-0 as the Falcons won three MAC matches to clinch the league regular-season title the previous week.
BGSU finished the regular season with a MAC record of 5-0 to win the title outright for the first time in school history.
In doubles action, Hiscox has teamed with sophomore Joel Carney for an 18-6 doubles mark this year. Their win total ties them for the ninth-most victories by a tandem in a season.
In his Falcon career, Hiscox has 139 total wins to rank fifth in school history. He is seventh on the singles wins list, with 68, and has moved into third place with 71 doubles victories in his BGSU tenure.
Hiscox is the first BGSU student-athlete to win the MAC Men's Tennis Player-of-the-Year award
The MAC's Newcomer-of-the-Year award went to Erick Martinez of Northern Illinois, while Christian Brattstrom of Western Michigan received the Jack Vredevelt Sportsmanship award.
The Falcons, the top seed for the MAC Championships, beat #4 Northern Illinois by a 4-2 score in Friday's (April 26) semifinal round, but lost to #2 Ball State, 4-3, in Saturday's (April 27) championship match.
