BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Four Bowling Green State University men's tennis student-athletes have been named to the 2002 All-Mid-American Conference team, the league office has announced. Juniors Geoff Hiscox and Nicolas Lopez-Acevedo each earned All-MAC First-Team honors, while senior Vitek Wild and sophomore Joel Carney were named to the second team.
The Falcons' four selections were the most of any MAC school. Ball State had three players selected to the team, while Northern Illinois and Western Michigan had two apiece and Toledo one.
Three of the four Falcons have earned all-conference honors in every year of their collegiate careers. Hiscox was named to the All-MAC Second Team as a freshman before earning first-team honors in both 2001 and 2002. Wild earns all-league second-team honors for the second time, and was an All-MAC pick in all four of his seasons, having been an all-league first-team selection as both a sophomore and a junior.
Carney, in his first year at BGSU, was named to the All-Atlantic 10 Conference Team as a freshman at St. Bonaventure University a year ago.
Lopez-Acevedo was the MAC Newcomer of the Year two seasons ago, and also earned all-league second-team accolades that spring.
Hiscox, a native of London, Ontario, became the first-ever Falcon to be named MAC Player of the Year on Saturday (April 27). He had a 23-11 singles record and a doubles mark of 24-12 this season. In MAC regular-season play, he went undefeated in both singles and doubles.
Hiscox had an incredible run in the ITA All-American Championships in the fall, becoming the first Falcon ever to advance through the prequalifier and the qualifier to make the main draw. He ended the fall portion of the schedule ranked 70th in the nation in the ITA rankings.
Hiscox was named the MAC Player of the Week twice in 2001-02, most recently on April 23 after going a perfect 5-0 as the Falcons won three MAC matches to clinch the league regular-season title the previous week.
In doubles action, Hiscox teamed with Carney for an 18-6 doubles mark this year. Their win total ties them for the ninth-most victories by a tandem in a season.
Hiscox had a total of 47 wins this season, tying him for seventh on the BGSU single-season list. In his Falcon career, Hiscox had 139 total wins to rank fifth in school history. He is seventh on the singles wins list, with 68, and has moved into third place with 71 doubles victories in his BGSU tenure.
Lopez-Acevedo, like Hiscox, was named MAC Player of the Week twice this season. A native of Guaynabo, Puerto Rico, he had a singles mark of 25-11 this season, going 3-0 in the MAC and 2-0 in league tourney action. In doubles, his 21-10 record included an 11-4 mark with Wild. That duo went 3-1 in conference regular-season play.
Lopez-Acevedo has earned numerous honors this spring. On April 14, he was named BGSU's Male Junior Scholar-Athlete of the Year. A few days later, he was named to the first team on the prestigious Arthur Ashe, Jr., Sports Scholars List. Lopez-Acevedo was the MAC's Male Scholar-Athlete of the Week on March 19.
Lopez-Acevedo's 25 singles victories this year tie him for the fourth-most in a season in school history, and his 46 combined wins place him 10th on that BGSU list. In his three-year Falcon career, he amassed 134 total wins, good for seventh all-time. He had 69 singles wins (T-sixth) and 65 doubles victories (T-ninth).
Wild, the winningest player in school history, earned all-conference honors in each of his four years. As a senior, he had a 20-15 singles record, including a 3-1 MAC mark. In doubles action, his 21-16 record includes the 11-4 mark with Lopez-Acevedo as well as a 7-4 record with fellow senior Mike Kossoff.
Wild's total of 41 victories this year ties him for 17th on that school list. His name can be found at the top of all three BGSU career lists, as he holds the records with 97 singles wins, 87 doubles victories and 184 combined wins. A native of Prague, Czech Republic, Wild holds the school single-season marks with 32 singles wins and 55 combined wins, setting both records as a freshman in 1998-99.
Carney, a native of Canton, Ohio, threatened Wild's single-season marks in his first year on campus. Carney had a 26-10 singles record to lead the team in singles victories. He added a 25-11 doubles ledger, leading the Falcons in doubles wins as well. Carney was a perfect 5-0 in both singles and doubles in MAC regular-season play.
Carney's singles win total is the third highest in a season in school history, and his total of 25 doubles wins places him seventh on that list. He finished third on the combined wins list, just four shy of Wild's single-season record.
Carney, as mentioned, teamed with Hiscox for 18 doubles wins this year, tying them for the ninth-most wins by a tandem on that BGSU seasonal chart.
The Falcons posted an overall dual-match record of 19-11 this season, recording 19 victories for the second year in a row. The Brown and Orange went 5-0 in MAC play to win the third regular-season title, and the first-ever outright crown, in program history.
BGSU defeated NIU in the semifinal round of the MAC Championships, but lost a 4-3 decision to BSU in the championship match Saturday (April 27). The Falcons' Jay Harris was named 2002 MAC Coach of the Year. He has led BG to a 91-62 (.595) dual-match record in his six years, including a MAC mark of 26-10 (.722).
