Bowling Green, Ohio - Using a season-high 19 hits and four double plays, Bowling Green took the final game of a four-game series against Ohio on Sunday at Warren Steller Field, 16-4. It was the third win of the weekend for the Falcons.
Ohio (9-15 overall, 1-7 MAC) actually had the early momentum, plating three runs in the top of the first inning, thanks to a three-run home run by Adam Fox to left field. The Bobcats added another run in the top of the second on a sacrifice fly by Brian White, scoring Jason Shockey, for a 4-0 OU lead.
However, BG found its groove in the second inning when they scored five runs on just two hits. Second baseman Corey Loomis and outfielder Len Elias led off the inning with back-to-back walks. Both moved up on a balk by OU pitcher Shaun Peet, starting his first collegiate game. Andy Hudak was hit by a pitch with a full count to load the bases for freshman Kevin Longstreth. The rookie catcher responded with a double to the right-field gap, scoring Loomis and Elias, and cutting the deficit to 4-2. Freshman leftfielder Jeff Warnock followed with a double of his own to right field, scoring Hudak and Longstreth, to knot the game at 4-4. Warnock came home later on a groundout by Tim Newell to give BG the lead for good, 5-4.
BG starting pitcher Burke Badenhop settled down after the first two innings and faced the minimum in the third, fourth and fifth innings.
An RBI-double by Hudak scored Loomis in the third inning for a 6-4 BG lead and the Falcons added two more in the fourth frame. An RBI-single by Kelly Hunt and RBI-double by Elias gave the home team an 8-4 lead after four innings.
BG put the game away in the sixth inning. Loomis started with a one-out double down the left-field line and scored on a Elias single. Hudak brought home Elias on a two-run homer to centerfield, his fourth of the season. Longstreth followed with a solo blast to left field, his first home run of his BG career, to give the Falcons a 12-4 lead.
Three more runs crossed for Bowling Green in the seventh inning. Hunt hit an opposite-field two-run homer, his eighth of the year, and Loomis hit a solo shot over the left-field wall for a 15-4 lead. Nick Elrod added the final run of the game on a home run to left field in the eighth inning.
Loomis ended with two doubles and his seventh homer of the season while combining with Elrod to turn four double plays in the contest. Elias (3-for-4) and Neil Schmitz (3-for-6) also ended with three hits in the game for BG.
Badenhop improved to 2-1 on the season, lasting eight innings and giving up four runs (three earned) on seven hits and two walks.
BG (11-14 overall, 4-4 MAC) hosts Dayton on Tuesday, April 9, at 3 p.m. before returning to the road for a 3 p.m. contest at Detroit on Wednesday, April 10.
