The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team, after closing the regular season with a pair of wins, saw the 2001-02 season end with a narrow first-round loss in the 2002 Kraft Mid-American Conference Tournament ... the Falcons of first-year head coach Curt Miller, the ninth seed for the 13-team tournament, fell by a 74-68 score to eighth-seeded Ohio University in a first-round contest on March 2 in Athens, Ohio.
STEFANIE WENZEL NAMED BGSU'S PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Sophomore Stefanie Wenzel was named the BGSU Player of the Year for the 2001-02 season ... the team was honored at the annual Women's Basketball Banquet, held on April 20 at the new Bowen-Thompson Student Union ... Wenzel, who earned the award in a vote of team members, led the Falcons in scoring with 11.6 points per game ... Dana Western-Schuka, the team's lone senior, earned the Falcon Award, presented to the player who exemplifies commitment, dedication and loyalty to the women's basketball program ... she was one of just two Falcons to start all 28 contests ... the other Falcon to start every game, junior Kim Griech, was named the Impact Player of the Year ... Griech earned the award, presented to the player who made significant contributions throughout the season, after averaging 10.4 points per game, good for second on the team ... sophomore Lindsay Austin was named the team's Playmaker of the Year after leading the Falcons and ranking among the conference leaders in assists and assist/turnover ratio ... redshirt sophomore Pam Brown was named the Power Player of the Year, given to the top post player ... despite missing 10 games due to injury, Brown averaged 7.3 points and a team-high 6.0 rebounds ... freshman Tene Lewis was named the Most Improved Player of the Year ... Lewis played in 24 games, making three starts, and was one of the team's top defenders ... junior Megan Jerome earned the Scholar-Athlete-of-the-Year award ... through two-and-a-half years at BGSU (entering the spring semester), Jerome maintains a perfect 4.00 GPA as a business administration major with a concentration in finance.
FRANCINE MILLER GRANTED EXTRA YEAR OF ELIGIBILITY: Senior Francine Miller has been granted an additional year of eligibility ... in mid-April, the Mid-American Conference office approved Miller's appeal for a medical hardship, meaning that she will return to the Falcon team for the 2002-03 season ... Miller, who was named to the Preseason All-MAC Team by the MAC News Media Association in October, played in just four of the Falcons' 28 games in 2001-02 ... she scored 26 points in the season-opening win at Youngstown State (Nov. 17), before suffering a knee injury less than four minutes into the Detroit game three days later ... Miller missed the remainder of the UDM contest, as well as the next nine games, with a knee injury ... she had surgery on Dec. 8 to remove loose cartilage from her kneecap, and returned for the Kent State game on Jan. 2 ... in that contest, she came off the bench to score a game-high 29 points ... in the next game, on Jan. 5 at Central Michigan, Miller scored a team-high 15 points off the bench ... Miller, who was not fully recovered, then elected to miss the remainder of the season while her injury healed ... Miller will enter the 2002-03 season with a career total of 1,149 points, ranking her rank 13th in school history ... she has averaged 14.01 points per game over the first 82 contests of her career, the third-best average in BGSU annals.
