Bowling Green, Ohio - Bowling Green swept a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon from visiting Eastern Kentucky, 3-2 and 7-5, finishing a three-game sweep of the Colonels at Warren Steller Field. The two games were seven innings each.
Pitching was the Falcons strong point in game one while BGSU used timely hitting in the nightcap to improve to 23-19 overall. The wins also gave the Brown and Orange a 13-3 record on their home diamond this season.
In game one, freshman Tyler Saneholtz pitched all seven innings, striking out five and walking none to improve his record to a team-best 5-1. Saneholtz allowed just four hits and two runs in his best outing of his rookie campaign.
EKU had only one hit in the first two innings before Chris Grynaviski led off the third inning with a double. A ground out moved him to third and he scored via a Josh Anderson single for a 1-0 Colonels lead.
The lead held until the fifth inning. Andy Hudak led off the fifth frame with a single and was moved over to second base thanks to a sacrifice hit by Kevin Longstreth. Hudak plated BGSU's first run of the game when David Barkholz singled to left field, tying the score at 1-1. After Barkholz stole second base, his 12th of the season, Tim Newell brought him home with a single down the right-field line for a 2-1 BGSU lead.
John Myles knotted the score at 2-2 with a solo home run in the top of the sixth off of Saneholtz' only mistake of the day.
However, BGSU regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth. Nick Elrod hit a one-out double down the left-field line and then scored the go-ahead run when Elias doubled to center field for a 3-2 Falcon lead.
Saneholtz retired the three batters he faced in the seventh to seal the victory.
BGSU had only six hits in the game with Barkholz finishing 2-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI. Corey Loomis' 11-game hitting streak was halted, finishing 0-for-2.
In game two, Len Elias again plated the game-winning run in the sixth inning. This time, though, the senior hit a solo home run to right field with the scored tied at 5-5 to give the Falcons the lead. Freshman Jeff Warnock added a solo blast of his own later in the inning, the first of his career, for the final 7-5 verdict.
BGSU gained the lead first by plating two runs in the second inning. Elias hit an RBI-triple to left-center field, scoring Nick Elrod, then Jimmy Lipari dropped a single to left field to score Elias.
EKU took the lead in the fourth inning with three runs. The game seesawed back and forth from there with the game tied twice more.
The Falcons took the lead in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI-single from Spencer Schmitz and sacrifice fly by Warnock. After EKU tied the score in the top of the fifth, Hunt hit a sacrifice fly to retake the lead in the bottom-half of the inning.
The Colonels wouldn't go away, knotting the score at 5-5 in the top of the sixth before Elias' dramatics in the home-half of the sixth inning.
Sophomore Neil Schmitz (2-1) entered in relief in the sixth inning to pick up his second win of the season. The left-hander allowed no hits or runs with two strikeouts in one and one-third of an inning.
Elias finished a double away from the cycle in the 7-5 victory. He ended the day 4-for-7 with three RBIs, including two game-winners. Tim Newell finished the two games 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored.
BGSU (23-19 overall) returns to Mid-American Conference action next weekend with a four-game series at East Division leading Kent State (May 10-12).
