June 11, 2002 | Baseball
The Bowling Green native struck out just 14 times in 214 at-bats this season while helping lead the Falcons to the MAC Regular Season championship. He tied Aric Christman's BGSU record for hits in a season with 86, while scoring a team-high 69 runs.
Hunt joins teammate Corey Loomis as the first BGSU position players to be named All-Americans since Chuck Black (second base) was a third-team ABCA All-America in 1978. Pitcher Jeff Hundley was a third-team ABCA All-America in 1998 .
Loomis was named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association All-America Third Team on June 11 NCBWA All-Americans. Loomis is the first Falcon to be named to the NCBWA All-America team, which is in its 14th season of recognizing collegiate baseball players.
The junior second baseman led the Falcons this season with a .404 batting average, as well as driving in 52 runs, hitting 13 home runs and 13 doubles, and scoring 61 runs with 78 hits. Loomis helped BGSU turn a school-record 65 double plays this season and win the 2002 Mid-American Conference regular season championship. He was named first-team All-MAC while earning second team as a sophomore. Loomis also registered a .715 slugging percentage and .472 on-base percentage in 2002.
While the three All-America teams have a solid flair from the state of South Carolina, there are a total of 34 teams from nine Division I conferences represented on the 2002 lists.
Loomis, a native of Pemberville, Ohio, was drafted last week in the 21st round of the amateur draft (620th pick overall) by the Detroit Tigers. He signed a professional contract this past weekend to forgo his final year of eligibility at BGSU. He finishes his Falcon career with a .361 batting average in 140 games played for the Brown and Orange. Loomis made 49 starts this season at second base while making 38 starts at second base as a sophomore and 24 starts at third base as a freshman.
