Bowling Green, Ohio - Bowling Green State University announced today the hiring of Ron Fogarty as assistant men's ice hockey coach. Fogarty will serve as assistant under BGSU head coach Scott Paluch. His appointment as assistant coach begins immediately.
Fogarty comes to BGSU after serving as an assistant hockey coach at Clarkson University the past three years. Fogarty served as the Golden Knights' top assistant this past season, helping Clarkson to a 17-15-6 record.
"We're really excited to have Ron join us," said Paluch. "He brings an excitement and passion to the position. He has a tremendous track record in recruiting and a work ethic that will be essential to our team's success."
"I'm very excited about joining the staff here at BGSU," said Fogarty. "To come to a team with such a storied tradition is great. I'm anxious to start the recruiting process, get to the know the current players, and get to know the alumni."
While at Clarkson, Fogarty helped recruit several of the Knights rising young stars, including Rob McFeeters, Randy Jones and Chris Blight. McFeeters was the 2001 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Rookie of the Year. Jones was an ECAC All-Rookie Team selection last season and Blight is rated as the 156th selection in the upcoming NHL Draft. Clarkson posted a 55-41-12 overall record the past three seasons while Fogarty served as a coach and won the 2001 ECAC Regular Season title.
Prior to coaching at Clarkson, Fogarty spent three years on the coaching staff of ECAC rival Colgate University.
"Professionally he is looking at a new challenge in helping to reestablish Bowling Green as a hockey powerhouse in the CCHA," said Clarkson head coach Mark Morris. "To know that he is with Scott Paluch is very comforting to me. He is a class act. We wish them nothing but success in the future."
A 1995 Colgate graduate, Fogarty was a member of the Red Raider ice hockey team for four years. He dressed for a school record 135-consecutive games during his career. He was named to the 1992 ECAC All-Rookie team and received Colgate's Coaches Award in 1994. In his senior year, Fogarty served as a team captain and was the squad's fourth-leading scorer with 39 points (17 goals, 22 assists). Fogarty was named to the Senior All-Star game at the conclusion of his senior campaign. He concluded his career with 141 points (51 goals, 90 assists), and ranks 20th on the school's all-time scoring list.
A native of Sarnia, Ontario, Fogarty played professional hockey for the Memphis Riverkings of the Central Hockey League during the 1995-96 season. He was voted to the All-Rookie team and was honored with the team's Mr. Hustle Award. Fogarty gained valuable coaching and recruiting experience from 1991-93 when he worked with the Bluewater Sharks (Bantam) of the Summer AAA. During his tenure there, the team compiled a 57-19-3 record and Fogarty was named the Coach of the Year after just one season. Fogarty is the owner/operator of the Ron Fogarty Hockey School in Sarnia, Ontario. Fogarty and his wife Monica have three young children: Jordan, Rachel and Emma.
Paluch has one more assistant coaching position to fill before the start of the 2002-03 season.
