BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Bowling Green State University volleyball head coach Denise Van De Walle has announced the team's schedule for the 2002 season. The Falcons are slated to play a total of 30 regular-season matches, including 10 at Anderson Arena. BGSU's season-opening match will be at home, against Oakland on Tuesday, Sept. 3.
The Falcons' non-league slate also includes participation in three tournaments prior to Mid-American Conference play. BGSU will play three matches each in tourneys hosted by nationally-ranked teams Colorado (Sept. 13-14) and Wisconsin (Sept. 20-21) as well as Pittsburgh (Sept. 6-7). BGSU also will play single matches at Michigan (Sept. 10) and IPFW (Sept. 17).
The Brown and Orange will have six matches against teams that participated in the 2001 NCAA Tournament. BGSU will play 18 matches vs. schools that posted a winning record last year, including seven contests against teams that won 20 matches a year ago.
BGSU's 18-match MAC slate begins with a road match at Ohio on Sept. 27. The Falcons, after tying for the MAC's East Division title in 2000 and winning the division outright last fall, will move to the West Division for all sports beginning with the 2002-03 academic year.
The Falcons, after heading to Akron on Sept. 28, begin a season-long, five-match homestand with an Oct. 2 match vs. arch-rival Toledo. BGSU will play two matches apiece against West Division foes Ball State, Central Michigan, Northern Illinois (the defending MAC Tournament champion), UT and Western Michigan, while meeting the other West school, Eastern Michigan, just once.
BGSU will play a pair of matches against Ohio of the East Division, while meeting each of the other East teams -- UA, Buffalo, Kent State, Marshall and Miami -- once each.
Of the league schools that BGSU faces just once, the Falcons will host UB, EMU and Marshall, while hitting the road to meet UA, KSU and Miami.
The 2002 MAC Tournament begins Tuesday, Nov. 26, with quarterfinal-round action at the sites of the four higher-seeded teams. The four survivors from that round will head to the site of the highest remaining seed for the semifinals (Nov. 29) and championship (Nov. 30).
BGSU's move to the West Division means that six of the eight 2001 MAC Tournament participants now reside in the West.
BGSU posted an overall record of 21-8 last season and went 12-6 in the MAC to capture the East Division. The Falcons have won 21 matches in each of the last three years.
