BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The grades have been compiled and tabulated, and the Bowling Green State University women's basketball team has had yet another successful year in the classroom. The student-athletes on the women's basketball squad posted a combined grade point average of 3.19 during the 2001-02 academic year.
Through the spring, 2002, semester, the Falcons of head coach Curt Miller now have a cumulative GPA of 3.15.
A total of six student-athletes have a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or higher, led by Megan Jerome's 3.96 GPA. Jerome, a rising senior, is a finance major. Stefanie Wenzel, who will be a junior in the fall, has a GPA of 3.95, while another junior-to-be, Lindsay Austin, maintains a 3.58 GPA.
"It was a goal during the year to stay in the top 25 nationally in team GPA," said Miller. "I am excited about our 3.19 overall GPA for the 2001-2002 school year. It gives us a solid chance to be recognized as one of the elite programs in the country in terms of team grade point average.
"The success of the players in the classroom is a huge selling point to future student-athletes that want to be in a competitive academic environment. The academic success of the players is a direct credit to their hard work off the floor."
Last year, BGSU was recognized by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association on that organization's Academic Top 25 list. The Falcons were ranked 20th in the nation among NCAA Division I schools in terms of GPA for the 2000-01 academic year. This year's WBCA rankings have not yet been released.
