FALCONS READY TO START
The Bowling Green State University, coming off a successful 2001 campaign, open the 2002 season with a Thursday night (Aug. 29) contest vs. Tennessee Tech University. The Falcons and Golden Eagless will tangle in a 7:00 p.m. tilt at BGSU's Doyt Perry Stadium (30,599).
BGSU posted NCAA I-A's top turnaround last fall, going 8-3 after finishing with a 2-9 record in 2000.
GO WEST
The 2002 season marks the Falcons' first as a member of the Mid-American Conference's West Division. BGSU was moved to the West after spending five seasons in the East Division. The move was a result of the MAC admitting the University of Central Florida (UCF) as a football-only member and placing the Golden Knights in the East Division.
The Falcons were picked to win the West Division by the MAC News Media Association.
HOME NIGHT GAMES
The Falcons were 3-0 at home in 2001 under their newly-installed permanent lights. BGSU is 7-2 all-time in night games (starting after 6 p.m.) at home, since the first night game in 1989, and the Falcons have a five-game home winning streak under the lights.
FALCON TRADITION The Falcons, who enter their 51st season as a Mid-American Conference member, rank second in MAC history in both conference wins (206) and championships (10). The Falcons' .607 winning percentage ranks third all-time. Miami, which is in its 54th season in the MAC, leads in wins (224), championships (13) and winning pct. (.661). BGSU has finished either first or second in the MAC standings in 22 of their previous 50 seasons in the league.
LOOKING TO WIN THE OPENER
The Falcons will be looking to win their season opener in consecutive seasons for the first time since winning the first game of the season in three consecutive years, 1990, 91, and 92. Prior to defeating Missouri, 20-13, in last year's opener, BGSU had lost eight straight season opening games.
STREAKING
A win over Tennessee Tech would give the Falcons a four-game winning streak dating back to last year. That would be the longest for BGSU since the 1994 season when it captured nine straight games.
BGSU VS. I-AA OPPONENTS
The contest against Tennessee Tech is just the second against a I-AA opponent since 1989. The Falcons also defeated the Golden Eagles, 40-15, in 1999.
PICKED TO WIN IT
Four different news agencies have selected the Falcons as the preseason favorite to win the MAC's West Division. The Sporting News, Lindy's, Athlon and The MAC News Media Association all believe BGSU will represent the West Division in the MAC title game.
The Sporting News gives BGSU its highest preseason national ranking at #44. Other teams on the Falcon schedule include #64 Missouri, #70 Toledo, #75 Western Michigan, #78 Ball State, #84 Kent State, #87 Kansas, #90 Northern Illinois, #91 South Florida, #98 Ohio, #103 Central Michigan, and #106 Eastern Michigan.
BGSU IN GOOD COMPANY
BGSU was one of six Division IA schools in the country to win at least eight games in football and 24 games in men's basketball last year. (Oklahoma, Miami (Fla.), Illinois, Maryland, Hawaii, BGSU).
