BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - With the start of the 2002 regular season less than 48 hours away, the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team took to the pitch for a final tuneup. The current Falcon squad welcomed back some former teammates in an alumnae match Friday evening (Aug. 30). Head coach Andy Richards got three goals from freshmen and one from a sophomore as the 2002 team posted a 4-0 win.
"It was a great game, very well played with a great spirit from both teams," said Richards. "It was wonderful to see all the alumnae from the past few years coming back, and seeing the tradition being built.
Sophomore Beth Rieman opened the scoring approximately 11-and-a-half minutes into the contest, and freshman Samantha Meister scored at about the 17-minute mark. Meister again found the back of the net just seven minutes later, giving the 2002 Falcons a 3-0 lead at halftime.
Freshman Leslie Dawley's goal in the 65th minute was the lone score of the second half.
"It was an exciting game," added Richards. "There were some great goals scored.
"It also gave us some things to work on in preparation for Michigan State. I'm grateful for all those alumnae coming back and helping us get our season started on a fun note."
The Brown and Orange will open the 2002 regular season, the sixth campaign in the history of the program, with a Sunday (Sept. 1) match vs. MSU. That contest will begin at 2:00 p.m. at BGSU's Cochrane Field.
