Falcons Head To OSU Tournament

The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team, riding a three-match unbeaten streak, will head to Columbus, Ohio, for this weekend's Ohio State Tournament. The Falcons (2-1-1, 1-0-0 Mid-American Conference) of head coach Andy Richards will play a pair of neutral-site matches, beginning with a Friday (Sept. 13) contest against the University of Pittsburgh. That match is scheduled to begin at 5:00 p.m. at OSU's Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
Following the Pitt match, the Brown and Orange will conclude tourney play with a Sunday (Sept. 15) match vs. the University of Missouri, scheduled for a starting time of 11:00 a.m. Next weekend, the Brown and Orange will return home to host MAC foes Miami (Sept. 20) and Ball State (Sept. 22) at Cochrane Field.
HEAD COACH ANDY RICHARDS
Andy Richards is in his third year as a head coach, all at BGSU, and has an overall record of 19-21-4 heading into the OSU Tournament. Richards, who came to BGSU after five years as an assistant coach at Oregon State University, was hired in April of 2000.
Ashlee Orr is in her third season with the Falcon program as well. Orr was named the BGSU assistant coach in late August of 2000.
LAST WEEK
The Falcons went 2-0-1 on the week, beginning with a Wednesday (Sept. 4) triumph over visiting Detroit, 5-2 ... Friday (Sept. 6), BGSU opened the MAC portion of the schedule with a 1-0 win at Toledo ... then, the Brown and Orange battled to a 1-1 double-overtime tie with host Eastern Illinois Sunday (Sept. 8).
KRISTY COPPES NAMED MAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK
On Monday (Sept. 9), sophomore Kristy Coppes was named the MAC Player of the Week ... Coppes earns the honor for the first time in her Falcon career ... she had four goals as the Falcons posted a pair of wins and a tie in three matches last week ... Coppes tied the school record with a hat trick, including the match-winning goal, in Wednesday's (Sept. 4) 5-2 win over Detroit ... the hat trick was just the fourth in school history, but the second by Coppes ... she also set a new BGSU record for fastest three goals by an individual, amassing her hat trick in a span of just 5:56 ... Coppes also scored a goal in Sunday's (Sept. 8) 1-1 tie at Eastern Illinois.
COPPES (AND TEAMMATES) ON CAREER CHARTS
Sophomore Kristy Coppes, after her four-goal week, now has a total of 16 career goals ... she has moved into a tie for third on the BGSU career list with senior Jill Conover ... another senior, Tracy Gleixner, holds the school record with 20 career goals ... Coppes now has 34 career points, good for fifth place on that list ... she moved past Beth Wechsler (1998-2001) with her goal at EIU ... Conover holds that school record, with 55 points in her career to date.
THE OPPONENTS
Pittsburgh will enter Friday's BGSU match with an overall record of 3-1 ... the Panthers have played four in-state foes, defeating St. Francis, Duquesne and Lehigh and losing to Penn State ... three different goalkeepers have seen action this year, with freshman Jamie Pelusi enjoying the most success to date ... Pelusi is 2-0, with complete-match shutouts in each of Pitt's last two matches (2-0 vs. Duquesne, 3-0 vs. Lehigh) ... senior Lauren Sciocchetti leads the Panthers with three goals on the year ... last year, Pitt finished 7-9-1 overall and went 2-4 in the Big East's Mid-Atlantic Division, good for fifth place ... head coach Roland Sturk has a record of 35-73-6 in his seventh year at Pitt ... he is 94-145-11 in his 13th season as a collegiate head coach ... the team's web address is www.pittsburghpanthers.com.
Missouri brings a 2-1-1 record into the weekend, and the Tigers will play host Ohio State Friday before facing the Falcons ... MU has faced some strong competition in the early going, with a win and a tie over ranked teams ... the Tigers downed Illinois and drew with Florida State ... in MU's other matches, the team lost to Indiana and defeated Miami (Fla.) ... all but one of the team's four contests have gone to overtime ... freshman Amber Swinehart is the lone Tiger player with more than one goal, having found the back of the net twice this fall ... junior goalkeeper Megan Duncan has played every minute, and has a 1.06 goals-against average ... in 2001, the Tigers finished 13-8-0 overall and placed fifth in the Big 12 with a 5-5 league ledger ... head coach Bryan Blitz is 63-52-3 in his seventh year with MU ... he has an overall record of 108-106-11 in his 12th season ... the school's athletic web site is www.MUTigers.com.

MEET THE NEW KIDS
The Falcons' starting lineup featured at least five freshmen in each of last week's three matches ... head coach Andy Richards started six frosh against both Detroit and Toledo and five against Eastern Illinois.
THE SCORING WAS FAST AND FURIOUS
As mentioned earlier, sophomore Kristy Coppes set a school record for fastest three goals in the Detroit match, scoring her hat trick in a span of 5:56 ... the Falcons set a team record for fastest four goals, taking just 7:50 to find the back of the net four times ... in fact, the Falcons and Titans combined for all seven goals in the match in just 20:25.
FIRST COLLEGIATE POINTS
A total of four players -- three freshmen and a senior -- scored their first collegiate points in the win over Detroit ... Leah Eggleton had a goal and an assist in the win, while both Samantha Meister and Ashley Wentzel picked up assists ... additionally, senior goalkeeper Erika Flanders drew her first collegiate assist ... then, freshman Julie Trundle joined that group two days later ... Trundle scored the lone goal of the match in Friday's 1-0 win at Toledo.
ROAD-OPENING SUCCESS
After the win at Toledo, BGSU is now 5-1-0 in road openers (including one neutral-site match) over the years, with the lone loss coming at Georgia.
NOTING THE FALCONS
Freshman Molly Bremen saw her first collegiate action in the Toledo match, and also played at EIU ... a total of 10 frosh have played in at least two matches this year ... BGSU is now 4-1-0 in home non-league contests since the beginning of the 2001 season ... the Falcons have scored a total of 19 goals in those five matches, for an average of 3.80 per contest ... since the outset of the 2000 campaign, BGSU is 5-2-0 at Cochrane Field against non-conference opponents ... both of the losses during that time have come against Michigan State ... in the six-year history of the BGSU women's soccer program, the Falcons now have a record of 5-7-8 in overtime matches ... BGSU is 2-0-6 in road OT matches all-time, and the Falcons have a 3-1-2 mark in overtime contests with non-MAC opponents.
