2002 Track Awards Banquet Held

The annual awards banquet was held to recognize performances from the 2002 BGSU Men's and Women's track and field seasons. Women's head coach Scott Sehmann recognized both the men's and women's top performers.
Earning Most Valuable Player status were junior Zerian Peterson and senior Lori Williams. Peterson was named to the All-MAC Second team for his accomplishments during the 2002 outdoor season. He finished fourth overall in the league in the 200 meters with a time of 21.03 and second at the MAC Outdoor Championships in the 400 meters with a mark of 46.53.
Williams was also named to the All-MAC Second team during the outdoor season for her performances in the field. Williams finished atop the league in the discus with a mark of 166-0 1/2 and third in the conference in the hammer throw with a distance of 178-6. She finished second at the MAC Indoor Championships in the weight throw with a mark of 60-03.
The Top Freshman award was given to Andre George for the men and Tamika Dixon for the women. George finished fourth in the league in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 53.34. Dixon was fifth at the MAC Outdoor Championships in the 400 meters event with a time of 55.85.
Being given the Leadership Award were senior thrower Pat Kania and junior distance runner Katrina Kerns. Kania had his best performance in the weight throw at the MAC Indoor Championships with a mark of 53-06 1/4. He finished sixth at the MAC Outdoor Championships in the hammer throw with a mark of 175-04. Kerns posted a season-best time in the outdoor 1500 meters at Hillsdale with a mark of 4:54.81. Her best finish on the season was ninth in the 1500 at the Jesse Owens Invite.
Most Improved was given to sophmores Kerry Koontz and Amber Culp. Koontz finished tied for 12th in the league in the pole vault with a mark of 14-11. His top indoor performance was a mark of 15-1 at the BGSU Invite. Culp finished in eighth place at the MAC Outdoor Championships in the 3000 meter steeplechase with a time of 11:18.68. Her top performance in the 5000 meters was at Hillsdale with a time of 18:24.90.
Captain's Awards were also given out to eight individuals. From the men's squad they were Zerian Peterson, Pat Kania, Tom Kutter and Kerry Koontz. For the women it was Lori Williams, Christine Thompson, Nicole Carter and JoVone Houpe.
The BG men's squad finished in eighth place (38) at the 2002 MAC Championships while the women placed 10th (41.5).
