Four Falcons Win Titles At BGSU Invitational

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Two members of the Bowling Green State University women's tennis team won singles titles, while another two Falcons combined to capture a doubles crown at the BGSU Invitational. The tournament, hosted by the Falcons Saturday and Sunday (Sept. 28-29), opened the 2002-03 season for the Brown and Orange.

Coach Penny Dean saw Gaby Coello win the title at the third singles flight, while Andrea Meister captured the sixth-flight crown in her collegiate debut. Laura Kokinda and Lindsey Mix won the third-flight title in doubles play.
No team scores were kept at the tourney, which featured Illinois at Chicago, Indiana State, Wright State and Xavier, in addition to the Falcons.
The Falcons' Lisa Maloney posted a second-place finish at the top flight, while Susie Schoenberger won the back draw at the second flight, defeating teammate Alyson Gabel in the fifth-place match.
In addition to Coello's performance at the third flight, Dean got a third-place finish from Cameron Benjamin. Heidi Romer, like Meister a freshman making her collegiate debut, advanced to the championship match of the fourth flight before finishing second. Jessica Johnson won the back draw at that flight.
Kokinda was third at the fifth singles level, while Mix placed sixth.
In doubles, Coello and Gabel were fourth at the top flight, while Maloney and Schoenberger were seventh. The Benjamin/Johnson team placed fifth at the second doubles flight, and the Meister/Romer duo posted a runner-up finish at the third level, losing to Kokinda and Mix in the championship match.
The Falcons are scheduled to return to action next weekend (Oct. 4-6) at the Wolverine Invitational in Ann Arbor, Mich.
