BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University softball schedule has been announced for the 2003 season. The Falcons of fifth-year head coach Leigh Ross-Shaw are slated to play in four spring tournaments before diving into the Mid-American Conference schedule in late March.
The Falcons move to the MAC's West Division for the 2002-03 academic year after five seasons in the league's East Division.
BGSU is slated to play in tournaments hosted by New Mexico State (Feb. 14-16), Tennessee Tech (Feb. 21-23), Louisville (March 7-9) and Virginia (March 14-16). In between the final two tourneys, the Brown and Orange will play a doubleheader at Morehead State (March 11).
The Falcons will open conference play with a doubleheader at Western Michigan on March 22. BGSU will briefly step out of MAC action to open the home portion of the schedule, hosting Michigan at the BGSU Softball Field on March 25 and welcoming Detroit to town the following afternoon.
The Falcons are scheduled to play three games against five of the other six West Division teams, hosting Toledo (April 6-DH, April 23) and Eastern Michigan (May 2-3) and travelling to Central Michigan (March 29-30), Ball State (April 12-13) and Northern Illinois (April 26-27). BG will play just two games against WMU.
Ross-Shaw's team will play three games against Akron of the East Division (April 18-19), and two games apiece vs. Ohio (April 2) and Miami (April 9). All seven of those games are to be played in BG.
East Division schools Buffalo, Kent State and Marshall do not appear on the 2003 regular-season schedule.
In addition to Morehead State, Michigan and Detroit, BGSU is slated to play non-conference doubleheaders at Oakland (April 22) and Cleveland State (April 29).
The MAC Tournament will be held at Firestone Stadium in Akron, Ohio, on May 8-10. The Falcons will be looking to make a return to the league tournament after failing to qualify in 2002. BGSU had made four consecutive MAC tourney appearances before last spring.
The Falcons finished 22-25-1 overall in 2002, and BGSU tied for third place in the East Division with a MAC mark of 11-13. Ross-Shaw loses the services of six seniors from that team.
