Netter Named MAC Player of the Week

Cleveland, Ohio - Ohio University's Brandon Hunter (East Division) and Bowling Green's Kevin Netter and Central Michigan's Mike Manciel(West Division) were selected as winners of the Mid-American Confer-ence Player of the Week award for the eighth week of the 2002-2003 season. The league office will select a player of the week from both divisions each week throughout the 2002-03 season.
MAC East Division Player of the Week
Brandon Hunter, Ohio
(Sr., F, Cincinnati, Ohio)
Hunter won his second consecutive award with a week that he produced averages of 25.0 points and 15.5 rebounds per game. In Ohio's 112-104 four-overtime win against Akron, Hunter had 30 points, shooting 58.8% (10-of-17) from the floor, 26 rebounds, six assists and three blocked shots. In an 87-84 loss at Central Michigan, Hunter provided 20 points and five rebounds. He shot 56.7% from the field (17-of-30) on the week.
MAC West Division Player of the Week
Kevin Netter, Bowling Green
(Jr., C, Richmond Dale, Ohio)
Sparked the Falcons' 24-point comeback win in a 78-74 Saturday triumph at Kent State that snapped the Golden Flashes' MAC record 17-game regular season conference winning streak. Netter scored 14 of his 18 points in the second half, shooting 6-of-7 from the field and 6-of-8 from the line. He hit two free throws with 1:03 remaining that gave BG the lead for good at 73- 72. On Tuesday, Netter paced the Falcons' first win at Ball State since 1997 with 17 points, shooting 7-of-11 from the field. For the week, Netter averaged 17.5 ppg and shot 72.2% (13-of-18) from the field as BG improved to 4-0 and first place in the MAC West Division.
Mike Manciel, Central Michigan
(Sr., F, Detroit, Mich.)
Averaged 21.0 ppg and 5.5 rpg as the Chippewas beat Western Michigan 80-75 and Ohio 87-84. Manciel had 23 points versus the Broncos while shooting 80.0% (16-of-20) from the floor and 85.7% (6-of-7) from three-point range on the week. Manciel was 9-of-11 at WMU and 7-of-9 versus Ohio from the field. He played all but four minutes of the two games.

West Division: Northern Illinois' Marcus Smallwood (Jr., F) averaged 15.0 ppg and 10.5 rpg as the Huskies won at Toledo, 72-65, and at Ball State, 66-64. Smallwood had 16 points and 10 rebounds at Toledo and 14 points and 11 rebounds at Ball State; Western Michigan's Mike Williams (Jr. F) returning from an injury, averaged 20.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and 3.0 steals in league games versus Central Michigan and Eastern Michigan. Shot 75.0% (18-of-24) for the week from the floor with a best of 24 points and 11 rebounds versus CMU.
East Division: Akron's Derrick Tarver (Jr., G) averaged 36.0 ppg and 2.5 rpg as the Zips lost in four overtimes to Ohio, 112-104, and beat Buffalo, 89-71. Tarver had 41 points versus the Bobcats and 31 against Buffalo; Marshall's Ronald Blackshear (Jr., G) averaged 27.0 points and 4.5 rebounds in wins over Buffalo, 69-63, and Toledo, 79-58. He had a high of 32 points versus the Rockets as MU went to 4-0 in MAC play for the first time in school history; Miami's Juby Johnson (Jr., G) scored 23 points, had seven rebounds and three steals in a 60-52 loss to Kent State.
