MOBILE, Ala. - University of South Alabama Athletics Director Joe Gottfried announced Thursday the hiring of Nicole Keshock (pronounced Key-shock) as the new Jaguar volleyball coach. Keshock, the former Nicole Mudrak, was a BGSU volleyball letterwinner.
Keshock spent the last three seasons as head coach at the University of West Florida where she started the Division II volleyball program in Pensacola, Fla. In just her third season, she directed the Lady Argonauts to a winning season and a berth in the Gulf South Conference Tournament. Keshock went 14-13 last season following a 6-17 mark in 2001 and a 5-20 record her initial season. In addition to her coaching duties at UWF, she also served as the Senior Woman Administrator. Just last year, she began the West Florida Storm Club Volleyball Program.
"I think it's a great position," said Keshock. "I think the program has a lot of positives. I know a lot of the players on the team having seen them play on club teams. There are a lot of things already in place, so I think we're just going to work on building on what we have and bringing in some new talent as well.
Keshock becomes South Alabama's 13th volleyball coach and replaces Ginger Mayson who resigned following the 2002 season.
"We are excited to have Nicole Keshock heading our volleyball program," Gottfried said. "She came highly recommended. She is excited to be here and that is a characteristic that we look for in reviewing candidates for positions. We had an outstanding group of applicants."
Keshock started her coaching career as a head coach at Division III Heidelberg College in Tiffin, Ohio from 1994-96. At Heidelberg, she was also an assistant softball coach and Physical Education instructor.
From 1996-98, she was the head volleyball coach at the University of Findlay (Ohio). She also served as an assistant track coach and taught Physical Education for the Division II program.
Prior to accepting the UWF position, Keshock was an assistant coach for two seasons at Eastern Michigan in 1998-99.
Keshock was a four-year volleyball letterwinner at Bowling Green from 1990-93. During her career, she led the Falcons to a pair of Mid-American Conference championships and a berth to the NCAA Tournament. She established a tournament record for most blocks in the National Invitational Volleyball Championships.
She earned her undergraduate degree in communications and a master's in sport administration, both from Bowling Green.
A native of Lake Milton, Ohio, she is married to Chris Keshock. The couple has a baby girl, Kayla Joy.
