BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Stefanie Wenzel is the Bowling Green State University Scholar-Athlete of the Week. Wenzel, a junior on the BGSU women's basketball team, scored a season-high 23 points in the team's lone game on the week, at preseason MAC West Division favorite Ball State.
Wenzel, a native of Sussex, Wis., led the Falcons in both scoring and rebounding, with 23 points and seven boards, in the game in Muncie, Ind. (Jan. 22). She had nine of her points in a five-and-a-half minute stretch as the Falcons erased a 15-0 deficit to tie the score, 19-19, midway through the first half.
On the night, Wenzel went 9-of-15 from the field en route to her season-high point total, and she made three of her seven three-point attempts. Four of her rebounds came at the offensive end.
That performance upped Wenzel's season averages to 10.0 points and 4.3 rebounds per game. She had 11.4 points and 5.2 boards in the first five MAC games of the year, and had made 7-of-14 three-point FG attempts in conference play.
Wenzel, who played sparingly as a freshman before having a breakout sophomore season, surpassed the 500-point mark for her career in the Ball State game, and ended that game witih a total of 521 points as a Falcon.
Wenzel, a language arts education major, has a stellar 3.96 cumulative grade point average through the fall, 2002, semester.
The Falcons of head coach Curt Miller, now 9-8 overall and 2-4 in MAC play, return home for a Saturday (Feb. 1) contest vs. Northern Illinois. Tipoff for that game is 1:00 p.m. at Anderson Arena.
