BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team's preparations for the 2003-04 season begin in earnest Saturday (Oct. 18), when the Falcons hit the Anderson Arena court for a 9:00 a.m. practice. Third-year head coach Curt Miller welcomes back six letterwinners from a year ago, plus nine players who did not see action for the Brown and Orange in 2002-03.
Miller will look to a pair of seniors, Lindsay Austin and Stefanie Wenzel, to guide the young squad. Each player enters the season with more than 70 career games played and over 600 points.
A pair of Detroit natives, Tene Lewis and Sakima Smith, are back for their junior seasons, while sophomores JIll Lause and Marisa Smith each have a year in Miller's system under their belts.
Casey McDowell, who sat out the 2002-03 season after transferring from Indiana State, begins her Falcon playing career this year after practicing with the Falcons last winter. She retains three seasons of eligibility.
Additionally, Kelly Kapferer, who has earned a pair of letters for the Brown and Orange, returns to the fold after taking last season off from competition. Kapferer, who averaged nearly eight points and 4.5 rebounds in Miller's first year at the helm, will be a redshirt junior in 2003-04.
Miller's seven freshman will add a great deal of talent and depth to the Falcon program. Saturday marks the first collegiate practice for Amber Flynn, Julie Gompers, Liz Honegger, Carin Horne, Ali Mann, Kim Nowakowski and Megan Thorburn.
Fans can get their first look at the Falcons on Nov. 3, as BGSU hosts the Premier All-Stars in exhibition play. The regular season begins on Saturday, Nov. 22, with a game at Youngstown State, while the home opener is Nov. 25 vs. Detroit. The UDM contest, set to begin at 5:45 p.m., is the first half of a hoops doubleheader at Anderson Arena. The Falcon women's program could play as many as five twinbills with the BGSU men's team.
