BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University women's tennis team opened the dual-match portion of the 2003-04 season on a successful note, with a 7-0 win over Wayne State University Tuesday afternoon (Oct. 21) at BGSU's Keefe Courts.
The Falcons, of course, are now 1-0 in dual matches, while the Warriors drop to 7-7.
A pair of Falcons, sophomore Heidi Romer and junior Cameron Benjamin, did not lose a single game at their respective singles matches. In fact, Romer did not allow a single point in her first set vs. Jackie Johnston at the third flight. Benjamin's win came against Dee Mays at the fourth flight.
All six BGSU singles competitors won in straight sets, including senior Gaby Coello at the top flight, freshman Ashley Jakupcin at the second level, sophomore Andrea Meister at flight number five, and junior Lindsey Mix at the sixth flight. Meister lost only three games, while Jakupcin and Mix each dropped only four games apiece in their matches.
In doubles play, senior Lisa Maloney and junior Susie Schoenberger lost only one game en route to their top-flight win. At flight three, Benjamin teamed with senior Jessica Johnson for an 8-0 sweep over their Warrior opponents. Meister and Romer won the middle doubles flight, 8-6.
The Falcons will be back in action Friday (Oct. 24), completing the fall portion of the schedule with a home match vs. Western Ontario. That match, scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m. at Keefe Courts, is the Falcons' final action until Jan. 24, 2004.
