Bowling Green, Ohio - Bowling Green used 47 shot attempts and three players with two goals to roll over visiting University of Windsor in an exhibition hockey game Friday night, 9-2, at the BGSU Ice Arena. Ryan Barnett, Bryan Dobek, and Mark Wires each netted two goals for the Falcons.
Sophomore Bryan Dobek put the Falcons on the scoreboard at just 3:17 of the first period with assists from D'Arcy McConvey and Dana Hanson. After Windsor's Alex White answered just over one minute later (4:43) to knot the game at 1-1, BGSU scored five unanswered goals to build its lead to 6-1.
"I enjoyed the competitive flair of our team tonight," said second-year BGSU coach Scott Paluch. "I think we proved for three periods that we're a quicker team than last year. I was also pleased with how we shored up our defense in the second and third periods."
After Windsor scored its early goal and had nine shot attempts in the first period, the Falcons held the Lancers to just one more goal and six shots (three each in second and third period) over the final 40 minutes of the game.
Starting goalie Jordan Sigalet played 34:52 with two goals allowed and 10 saves. Sophomore Bob Frazee (13:13, one save) and freshman Bobby Pruchnik (11:55, two saves) finished between the pipes for BGSU.
Six different Falcons netted goals, including Steve Brudzewski, James Unger, and Ryan Minnabarriet. Besides two goals, sophomore Ryan Barnett ended with two assists, as well. McConvey and Kevin Bieksa also had two helpers.
"We worked real hard in the off-season and it was good to see it pay off tonight," said Barnett.
Lancer goalie Jay Ewasiuk ended with six goals allowed and 19 saves in 28:31. Back-up Scott Murray played the final 31:29, giving up three goals with 19 saves.
BGSU was 2-for-7 on the power play while UW was 1-for-6. The Falcons held a 47-15 shot advantage, including 20-9 in the first period.
The Falcons kick off their 2003-04 regular season next weekend (Oct. 10-11) with a Central Collegiate Hockey Association series at Northern Michigan. Both face-offs are scheduled for 7:35 p.m. and can be heard on 88.1 FM WBGU.
