CLEVELAND, Ohio - Bowling Green State University sophomore Samantha Meister has been named to the Academic All-Mid-American Conference Team, the league office announced Friday (Nov. 21). Meister earns the honor for the first time in her Falcon career, in her first year of eligibility.
The Academic All-MAC Team is the result of voting by the faculty athletic representatives of the 13 member institutions. Due to a tie in the voting, a 12th member was added to the team.
Meister led the 2003 Falcons in scoring, with 26 points on the season. Last year's MAC Freshman of the Year, she scored nine of her goals vs. MAC opposition this season. Meister had 17 points in the Falcons' 12 league regular-season contests, and figured in the scoring of both BG goals (a goal and an assist) in the team's 2-1 win over top-seeded Eastern Michigan in the MAC Tournament quarterfinals.
Her regular-season highlights included scoring a MAC-record four goals in a 4-3 win over Northern Illinois, and the OT winner in another 4-3 contest, at Marshall in a match the Falcons had to win to qualify for the league tourney.
Meister has scored 12 goals in her last 17 MAC regular-season contests. She has 43 career points, ranking fifth in school history, through just 36 career contests. She also ranks fifth in BG history with 16 career goals, and is sixth in school annals with 11 assists.
Meister was one of six players to make both the All-MAC and the Academic All-MAC teams in 2003. Ball State's Dee Nocero, Buffalo's Devon Russell, Kent State's Lauren Caminati, Miami's Ashley Swinehart and Toledo's Melissa Lesage each made both teams.
MAC Regular-Season co-champion KSU had two honorees, Caminati and Kacy McMillan, as did Northern Illinois, with Katie Klaas and Anne Roman. Central Michigan's Katie Conway, EMU's Michelle Lawrence and Western Michigan's Kate Perz round out the academic all-league team.
The honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
Meister maintains a 3.42 cumulative grade-point average as a graphic design major.
The Falcons finished the season with an overall record of 8-12-3, and BGSU went 5-5-2 in MAC play. Fourth-year head coach Andy Richards' squad, seeded eighth for the league tournament, advanced all the way to the championship match for the second time in those four years.
