BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Post-game comments from Bowling Green State University head coach Curt Miller, senior Lindsay Austin and freshman Ali Mann after the Falcons' 77-53 win over Detroit in Tuesday's (Nov. 25) home opener...
SENIOR POINT GUARD LINDSAY AUSTIN
(On BGSU's zone defense:)
"I think our zone defense kind of slowed them down. They have a motion offense, and they pass many times before they take a shot, so I think the zone slowed them down and worked effectively."
(Did Coach Miller find anything to complain about at halftime?)
"Yes, he found something (laughs). Last year, we led at halftime in a lot of our home games, and we would come out and let down in the first few minutes (of the second half). Coach said that the game was 0-0, and he wanted us to play just as hard as at the beginning of the game."
"To get a win in our home opener is huge, after losing at Youngstown State. It's good for our morale, so we have some confidence heading to Corpus Christi."
FRESHMAN FORWARD ALI MANN
"I think our defense got us going. We came out hard on the boards, and that led to our offense and offensive production."
(On the Falcons' scoring:) "We had a very balanced game, and everyone stepped up and made shots."
HEAD COACH CURT MILLER
"I was disappointed that Detroit went to halftime with a little bit of momentum. We had some turnovers late in the half, we gave up some offensive rebounds, and I didn't want to let the momentum slip away from everything we had worked so hard to gain in the first half."
"I was taught by some of my mentors, including (Kent State coach) Bob Lindsay, that sometimes the easiest time to be hard on them is after you've played a good half. Behind the scenes, the coaching staff knew we did a pretty good job. But, we were disappointed with the last few minutes."
(On the play of the freshmen:)
"This freshman class is very talented, and they can really score. A lot of the focus early on, rightfully so, has gone to Megan Thorburn. But, we know that multiple players on this team, especially the freshmen, can really put the ball in the basket. At Youngstown, we had one double-figure scorer until Lindsay scored, nearly at the buzzer. We talked about spreading the point production around, because we have a lot of people who can put the ball in the basket."
"We got a lot of points from our freshmen again. We're averaging 39 or 40 (actually 43.5) points per game from our freshmen, and that's a really exciting to me. In our opening week, our freshmen have not been scared."
"For the second game in a row, we outrebounded a good rebounding team. I think we're sending a message loud and clear that we have improved our rebounding woes from the first two years. We are a better rebounding team, and again did a good job on the boards."
(On getting the early lead:)
"I think the tempo was right. We took advantage of them missing some shots, and the tempo definitely benefitted us. Lindsay Austin helped set the tempo by pressuring their guards, and did not let Detroit get in the flow of the game that they wanted. They won a 50-49, slug-it-out, slow game with Toledo, and we felt that we wanted this game in the 70s. The best thing we did coming out of the lockerroom was to create tempo."
(On BGSU's shooting success:)
"We shot miserably at Youngstown, so (the first half) gave our kids a lot of confidence ... we are a good-shooting team. I expect our shooting percentages to be better than what they were at Youngstown."
"I thought the first half was great. With the exception of the one late (Detroit) run, I felt like we really attacked them, and did what we wanted to do at both ends. We definitely came out the aggressor, and I think, most of the time, the aggressive team wins the game ... we were hungry tonight, and emotion plays a big part in women's basketball."
