BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Bowling Green State University redshirt sophomore Ali Shingler has been named to the Academic All-District IV University Division Women's Soccer Team, it was announced Thursday (Nov. 6). Shingler, who earns academic all-district honors for the first time in her career, was named to the third team.
Shingler maintains a perfect 4.00 cumulative grade point average as a biology major.
A native of Grove City, Ohio, Shingler has played in 20 of the Falcons' 21 matches to date this season, making 19 starts in goal. She has a total of 98 saves and a goals-against average of 2.06.
Shingler has posted three complete-match shutouts so far this year, against Cincinnati, Ball State and Kent State, and she played one half of a Falcon shutout win over Wright State.
Shingler, in her first season as the Falcon starting 'keeper, already ranks second on a pair of BGSU career lists. Shingler has 101 career saves, and the three complete-match shutouts to trail only Erika Flanders (1999-2002) on those lists.
Shingler is only the second student-athlete in the seven-year history of the BGSU women's soccer program to earn academic all-district honors. Jill Conover was a first-team selection in 2001 before earning second-team accolades in 2002.
The Academic All-District IV University Division Team is made up of student-athletes from Division I schools in the stats of Alabama, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee. To be nominated, a student-athlete must hold at least sophomore status, be a starter or key reserve, and carry a cumulative GPA of 3.20 or higher. Team members are selected by a vote of members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) within the district.
The 2003-04 academic year marks the third time a women's soccer team has been selected. Prior to the 2001-02 academic year, women's soccer student-athletes were part of the Fall/Winter Sports At-Large ballot.
The Falcons are 8-11-2 heading into Friday's (Nov. 7) Mid-American Conference Tournament semifinal round. BGSU, the eighth seed for the tourney, will face fifth-seeded Central Michigan in a match beginning at 11:00 a.m. in Kalamazoo, Mich.
